STOP-MOTION MOVIE – 15mm Sci-Fi Combat

Hey guy, after viewing a Space Hulk stop-motion video on U-Tube I felt inspired enough to have a go at one of my own. It is very much 'work in progress' at the moment. I plan to try and add a little bit extra each day for the next week.

lol That's awesome! I especially like the smoke cloud puffing up on the street at the beginning!

Earl of the North11 Mar 2008 7:32 a.m. PST

Very Nice, a little confusing as to who's, who (the imperials are the 15mm GZG and the Laserburn guys are the other guys?).

diehard11 Mar 2008 8:23 a.m. PST

Very cool.

Nice start! I want more.

Vulture11 Mar 2008 5:19 p.m. PST

Thanks for the positive feedback guys :)

Yes for those slightly confused the GZG figs are Imperial scout troops in this movie. The good guy rebel alliance are the old Laserburn figures :-)

A few too many birds cheeping I agree, LOL, I'll sort it out soon.

ZeroGee2 I plan to get a few minutes of footage shortly of more of your Grav vehicles, especially the Heavy Gun sled :)
(my favourite vehicle)

Regards to all

Nice – I think I recognize some of those sound clips from the old MS Close Combat computer game?

Great work!

Well spotted ! :) Yes there are a few clips from Close Combat, plus some from Combat Mission (probably the best PBEM PC Wargame ever made), and obviously several from a variety of films.. :)

Hi Vulture,

Great work, I love the smoke screen in the street.

What program are you using to put it together?

I'm currently using the Windows Movie Maker that comes with XP.

It is pretty straight forward to use. You just drag the images you want to use into a window, and then drag them in the sequence you want into a timeline. You can set a default for the time each frame is in view or manually adjust them. I've opted for 0.75 of a second per frame as one I can currently live with. Obviously the small this number the smoother the action, but the number of photos required goes up exponentially !

Main snag/drawback I've found so far seems to be on the sound. It is not possible to overlay one sound on top of another unless I use some sort of sound mixer (Unless someone can tell me how ?). I don't want to do that as it would make the process v complicated.

For picture editing I used the clone brush in Paintshop Pro 9 to edit out part of the support stand on the GZG High Tech Hover tank. The novelty of doing that on approximately 40 pictures wore off pretty rapidly I can tell you ! LOL

Cheers

In my teens I played with stop action with a cine camera. surpriing how good charges by ESCI Zulus or sci-fi tank lurching over terrain looked.

Might be something to play with again…

Thanks Vulture!

Awesome. The APC getting taken out at the end was my favorite part.

In the opening scene, as the Imperials are entering the town, it would be great to go back and do a couple shots from the Alliance view point, as the hover-assault gun comes menacingly around the corner.

Excellent idea ! I might try that tonight :)

I'm also thinking of taking some footage as if looking through the eyes of the robot who makes an appearance at the end of the third scene, and showing stuff in B&W.

The possibilities are endless, the time available to get it done on an evening is v short though !! LOL :)

Please keep us posted as you make additions and changes.

I should have mentioned that I liked the "digital effects" for the hover tank, and the choice of end credits music a la Kelly's Heroes.

Okay I'm happy to post when any changes are make thumbs up .

When I left work yesterday I had big big plans for things I wanted to do, but as normal, family stuff got in the way frown .

Did manage to get a short (Gladiator) speech scene in, and make some other minor sequencing tweaks though grin . By that time it was 00:15 and time for bed

Will try and insert some extra combat footage in the first scene tonight, if I have time.

Cheers

Dude, thats awesome. Well done. The sound effects were classic.

Reminded me of home movies I made in my back yard w/ burning plastic tanks and soldiers (will probably give me cancer) back in the 70's.

You got me thinking about filming my medieval battles now…perhaps to some Wagner?

Very well done -- you have more patience than I do!

Yeah, the sound is definitely a problem. There are freeware sound editors out there that would let you layer the sound effects and music a little better. Go to download.com and poke around.

Also, you can get some good royalty free music here: flashkit.com

And something to think about: Edit a few Muzzle flashes here and there, and consider adding a flash/negative effect to go along with the explosions. That might shake things up a bit.

GREAT work, though! Can't wait to see more.
