Hi, I'm in need of some urgent advice! I made a mold of a fortification piece yetserday, but underestiamted how much silcione I needed. This meant that part fo the object was only just covered and the mold is to thin and is splittimng slightly.

Is there any sort of tape or anything else I can put over the weak pieces to stop the plaster falling out and stop the mold ripping?

Brush a small amount of silicone over the splits to reseal and let dry. Then put mold back in box and add more silicone to back- it should bond with the old stuff.

There are also 'molding' clays you could try- roll a bed of the clay for the mold and place the old mold on top of it, etc. Make sure the mold is level, though.

Having 'decyphered' your question-
Is the master still in situ? If you haven't taken it out of the mould container or released it from the mould itself, then all you need do is mix a little more silicone and pour it on.

Mix More Silcon Quickly…

It won't matter if the silicone has gone off- it sticks to itself like Bleeped text to a blanket.

Thanks all,..sorry about the gibberish in the post, I was trying to stop my one year old typing at the time!

It's good to know that it sticks to itself! I have used some silcion left from a previous mold and managed to patch it up for now. I'll gets some more silicon at some stage and do a better job!

I was wondring if there is any sort of sticky tape that would stick to silicon!

Nobody suggested duct tape – the good kind will likely stick, I've used as a temporary measure a few times.

However a repair with silicone is the best way to go – have used that to repair broken molds for years (I have many old gravity casting molds where pieces have torn out and have repaired/replaced large sections of a mold using silicone).

nothing sticks to silicone for long except more silicone.

Clean the silicone with Bestine – it's a rubber cement thinner. That MIGHT gave the silicone enough tack for tape to stick.
One thing you can do is save old used up molds, grind them up, and after you get a good coat of rubber on a master, use the ground silicone (moxed up with some new to makea "paste") to back the molds up.
