Don't ask me why, but I keep going back to the 10mm Copplestone Castings Fantasy page, over and over:

link

IF, and I really mean IF, I ever try 10mm, I am going to want more that just the few poses shown in those packs. So . . .

1) Who else makes 10mm fantasy (or suitable 10mm historicals)?

2) And, more importantly, how do they compare?

Thanks.

Look at Pendraken:

pendraken.co.uk/ancients.htm

I painted a bunch of Pendraken Dacian archers for a local gentleman who wanted to use them as Gondorian levy archers (Pinnath Gelin et al.). He had also modified Saxons (adding helmet wings and cloaks) as peoper Citadel Guard.

They seemed to match well in size with GW's Warmaster figures.

Wow. Those Dacians look pretty nice:

So, how do they (and the Warmaster ones you mention) compare to the Copplestone Castings?

Thanks.

Cacique,

A friend of mine and I have been doing some very large 10mm LOTR battles using modified Warmaster rules. We last did a siege with almost 3000 figs on the table. Here is what we use.

Orcs – GW Warmaster, Copplestone
Goblins GW Battle of five armies
Trolls – GW warmaster
Ogres – GW warmaster and BOFA
Uruks – Copplestone
Uruk Berserkers – Old Glory Dacian Falxmen
Easterlings/Haradrim – Mix of Old Glory Arabs/Byzantines
Mumaks – 28mm toy elephants with sculpted howdahs
Gondor – GW Brettonians
Gondor Rangers – Old Glory Saxon Archers
Rohan – Copplestone & Old Glory Visigoths
Elves – GW warmaster, Old Glory Saxon Archers for rangers
Dwarves – GW dwarves
Ents – 28mm OOP GW Dryads with woodland scenic armatures
Characters – Copplestone
Ringwraiths on Nazgul – GW Warmaster undead dragon with rider (and some greenstuff)

This stuff is all pretty compatable. Kallistra is a little too big and pendrakon and minifig are a little too small.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have questions.

leidang03 Jan 2008 11:50 p.m. PST

Ooops… I forgot.

Wargs – GW warmaster, BOFA and Copplestone

Cacique Caribe04 Jan 2008 12:09 a.m. PST

Very nice list!

What's "BOFA"?

Zagloba04 Jan 2008 12:14 a.m. PST

"Battle of Five Armies"- A GW set.

Eureka and Minifigs/AIM also make fantasy 10 mm. I have some Eureka beastmen that are nice.

Magister Militum makes ancients, as does Steve Barber and Noble.

I have the bug, too. For months now I've been convincing myself that I have enough projects already.

Rudysnelson04 Jan 2008 8:14 a.m. PST

GFI carries AIM 10mm fantasy. I used a combo of them and Pendraken for my armies.

mandt204 Jan 2008 9:47 a.m. PST

Kallistra Limited, normally known for their plastic interlocking hex terrain has a pretty extensive line of 10mm Medieval and Fantasy minis. They are a little on the big side, but play well with the Copplestone stuff. They also offer a free ruleset.

Wow. The 10mm figure manufacturers have really come a long way since I considered them last (which was back in the mid-late 70s)!

leidang04 Jan 2008 10:42 a.m. PST

One other thing to note is how many figs are on a strip and how long they are for the units.

For instance GW and Copplestone generally have strips that fill at 40mm base and have 6 to 8 figures. Old glory only has 5 figures to a strip and you need to splice on 2 more in order to fill a 40mm base.

Kallistra has only 4 or 5 figures per strip but has alot of spacing so it still fills the 40mm base. Some of the other manufacturers have individual figures not strips. Just another thing to be aware of.

I forgot to mention that for siege engines we use Old Glory and Kallistra. Siege towers we scratch built and our castle stuff is from Kilroy Ind. home.insightbb.com/~kilroy07

Hey, CC. Do you know about this yahoogroup?

Black Cavalier04 Jan 2008 11:33 a.m. PST

There's also a 10mm wargaming yahoo group too:

Cacique Caribe04 Jan 2008 11:39 a.m. PST

Now for the BIG QUESTION . . .

Can a proper 10mm game be played on a 40" by 40" table???

What is the usual table size for a 10mm game?

CC

leidang04 Jan 2008 12:21 p.m. PST

Way too small for the big stuff that we are currently doing but the original Warmaster game suggested armies that were made up of about 8-10 units. It would probably be big enough for that.

It all comes back to how much manuever room you want.

We play some pretty large games on a 6' x 7 1/2' table with around 30 to 40 units per side and it gives a pretty good feel. Still plenty of manuever room.

Cacique Caribe04 Jan 2008 12:27 p.m. PST

Ok then. My plan for a reduced 40" by 40" table will have to give way to my existing 80" by 40":

link

The pieces on the photo are 25-28mm.

CC

leidang04 Jan 2008 2:51 p.m. PST

That would work. You could always shrink it down for smaller games. Although there is nothing like the look of huge numbers of 10mm figs….

I should have a website up in the next month or so and I'll be posting some pictures. I'll post something on TMP then to give you some inspiration. If you are doing LOTR just et me know and I can give you a copy of our house rules and unit stats for Warmaster Ancients.

nevals04 Jan 2008 8:38 p.m. PST

I see that Magister Militum has Orcs and Elves in 10mm.Anyone has seen those?

Rudysnelson04 Jan 2008 9:34 p.m. PST

yes they are fine.

1954steve04 Jan 2008 10:04 p.m. PST

How do the Magister Militum Elves and Orcs compare in size and quality to Copplestone? I don't see them on the MM site.

Cacique Caribe05 Jan 2008 12:06 a.m. PST

I really wish manufacturers took close-ups like these:

Who makes those orcs/gp\oblins in the pics Cacique?

I couldn't agree with you more, CC. I do not know why 10mm and 15mm manufacturers are so lax in this department. I think both would see a boost in sales if the companies provided good images.

I have a little bit of everything in my collection, and in terms of quality, detail, and size, GW Warmaster, Copplestone fantasy, and GW BoFA are by far my favorite (and hands-down the best). Nothing comes close, in my opinion.

I am currently working on a massive 10mm LotR project spawned by the initial box set for BoFA. I have since branched out into finding and painting proxies for the whole world. The links below will give you an idea what I am up to these days.

My first 10mm Eureka Mumak can be found here. It is just a prototype, and deeper in the thread you will find images of the next one I am working on.

You are absolutely right. I guess I didn't take such a detailed look the first time around.

Fantastic site indeed. Thanks for sharing it.

Incredibly inspiring! I'm almost sorry I'm doing LOTR in 25mm!

While you are on your 10 mm kick, you will probably *love* the stuff at this site, CC:

Enjoy!

noraneko10 Jan 2008 6:16 p.m. PST

I started a "Copplestone Castings Wish List" over at TLA, although I do not know if it will do any good, and I am not sure what the status of this range is (the last release was almost five months ago).

Anyway, I plan to show it to Mark, if enough requests are posted. You never know…

How soon ……………….?

Love to see some not Gondor infantry and cavalry and some Easterlings.

Cacique Caribe11 Jan 2008 10:49 p.m. PST

QUESTION: Does anyone know who the fella on the top right in this photo (second from the end – with sword and round shield) is supposed to be?

picture

CC

noraneko11 Jan 2008 11:17 p.m. PST

I've pondered over that a little myself, CC. The only explanation I can come up with is:

1) He's a Beornling, or

2) Random freebee thrown in for the hell of it.

Cacique Caribe12 Jan 2008 10:39 p.m. PST

Whichever one he happens to be, it looks like an amazing figure.

I've gotta get them all!!!

QUESTION:

Has Mark ever put the 10mm Fantasy on his monthly specials page?

link

CC

noraneko15 Jan 2008 8:34 p.m. PST

Oh, yeah. I've seen specials for his 10mm stuff at least twice: once for the horse tribe , and once for the orcs. They were great deals, if I recall. And I think they came after he finished a group (i.e., orc, half-orc, horse tribe) in his total range.

Cacique Caribe17 Jan 2008 7:34 p.m. PST

"I think they came after he finished a group (i.e., orc, half-orc, horse tribe) in his total range."

Here I was hoping that the deals would be cyclical (not simply introductory). :(

CC

noraneko17 Jan 2008 10:33 p.m. PST

"Here I was hoping that the deals would be cyclical (not simply introductory)."

Not always the case, CC. I think it is a little bit of both, actually.

And keep your fingers crossed: 10mm Middle-earth is enjoying greater popularity as of late; and you never know what market forces might compel a manufacturer to do!

RocketToad17 Jan 2008 11:55 p.m. PST

Kallistra make some really good gear at a really good price.

Cacique Caribe05 Feb 2008 11:35 p.m. PST

Wow. Look at the "10/15mm Models" section on this site:

CC

CPBelt07 Feb 2008 9:51 p.m. PST

Hey, CC, have you decided to go 10mm after all? Once I finish painting my 15mm US and German platoons for DH skirmish, I want to finish my 10mm Old Glory Dacian army. I was going to go 15mm fantasy, but all this talk of great 10mm figures and my tiring of painting 15mm figures is sucking me back into 10mm. Maybe some Copplestone orcs for my Dacians to fight? Hmmm….

BTW I think the OG Dacians are one of the best 10mm figures out there. The detail is amazing! Dacian infantry on 1" strips is a killer, though because I can't snip them like other OG Dacian figures, like the falxmen, to fill a 40mm base.

Cacique Caribe09 Mar 2008 8:11 p.m. PST

I have a feeling 10mm is definitely in my future . . .

They are lovely aren't they. The problem these days is that so many manufacturers are making such lovely figures, in so many different scales, that it's hard to choose what to do and what to leave out. In my case I end up with them all because I have zero willpower when it comes to toy soldiers.
