I have at last finished my Pig Iron Platoon Pack, beefed up a bit with a HI Booster pack and an Ironshield kit. Yay!

Here's a link to the photoset on Flickr:

They are painted as the French Foreign Legion in the 2300AD role-playing game by the dearly departed GDW.

After participating in the desperate struggle for the French colony on Aurore in 2298, the 13 DBLE was re-deployed to Joi and then Kimanjano, gateway to the richest worlds of the French colonial Arm, in mid-2301. When the alien Kafer invasion began in December, the 1st Battalion dispersed to the mountains and prepared to fight another tooth-and-nail battle.

On December 27, 2301, 2eme Section of 1ere Compagnie, 1/13 DBLE found itself facing an entire Kafer mechanized regiment at the mountain village of Cevennes. Ordered to hold as long as possible to cover the escape of a column of civilians further into the mountains, the Legionnaires dug in and readied themselves. Using the narrow entry to the valley to their advantage, like the ancient Spartans, these 35 Legionnaires held off around 1,000 alien mechanized troops for nearly 6 hours, thus allowing the refugees time to escape.

2eme Section was wiped out to a man, but their names are recorded forever on the Monument to the Dead in Aubagne, France, and Cevennes has entered into Legion tradition, alongside Camerone, as a day to remember.

Very good, Almost makes me want to change to 28mm from 15mm.

Mutant Q03 Jan 2008 9:53 a.m. PST

Cool! All you need now are some decent Kafers for them to fight.

Very nice!

Would the GZG Kr'Vak work as Kafir? I thought I remembered someone using them for that.

I LOVE the 2300AD setting and your FFL look great. I especially liked the robot for some reason. It just looks right.

joedog03 Jan 2008 10:35 a.m. PST

They look great, Mike. As usual.

Stinger Six03 Jan 2008 11:41 a.m. PST

Thanks for the props everyone! The Pig Iron stuff was really fun and easy to paint and I can't say enough good things about them!

First opponent is gonnna be joedog there, and some Kolony rebels I believe (could be separatists on Joi, perhaps, in the 2300AD 'verse anyway). Gonna use Stargrunt II for the rules.

I'm planning a platoon of Kolony troops myself in the future. And I do believe the GZG Kra'vak often fill in as Kafer, so I may look into those.

And who doesn't love that poor PI "schlep-bot"! Awesome mini!

Fantastic work. I made you a contact on Flickr so that I can be sure to see your future work.

Lysander03 Jan 2008 9:21 p.m. PST

Wow, those are fantastic! So much for my intended urban paint scheme for my Pig Iron troops (I don't think I can match the quality paint job, though).

I like the GZG Kafers (and own a platoon as well) but they are maybe a little smallish compared to the Pig Iron troops. I can't think of any alternatives though.

BTW, there are the new Traveller 2320 RPG rules for those still in love with that universe. I picked it up ( downloaded it to be more accurate) and it is quite well done.

VIVE' LA LEGION!! evil grin

Very nice work, very nice background for the 2eme Section of 1ere Compagnie, 1/13 DBLE!

"Remember Cevennes!" would no doubt become a rallying cry for the Legion Etranger ever after.

The incident I cited was actually based on a 2300AD roleplaying campaign I ran last year. You can find the "story hour" thread here on the RPG.net forums:

The actual post where the battle starts is #12 , but it was a short, 3-session campaign. You can read the whole thing from post #1 if you're so inclined. :-)

I've rearranged the photoset I put up on flickr – you can now see all of the pics of the Pig iron minis I have in one slide show.
