I have looked far and wide for pictures of 15th century Scottish Pikemen and I have found none. What sort of armor would be appropriate for these soldiers of the early part of the 1400s?

Anything from no armor at all and just a tunic to a padded/quilted gambeson, studded or bare leather jack, a few with chainmail. They also wore a variety of headgear, kettle helms, nasal helms, bullet helms, no helmet, etc... They would often have a small round shield or targe but I suspect that heater shields, teardrop shields and larger round shields would be common as well. I would guess that a lot of them would have no shield at all. |

I believe there is an Osprey with some pictures. I can't remember the title. |

I found a picture of the 1300's in "Armies of the Middle Ages 1" WRG - it refers to Statute of Arms and suggests that a person of £10 moveable property needed an aketon, bascinet, gauntlets, sword and spear. As the century went on the demand to have armour intensified. However "the small folk" should just have a spear or bow. These would have been the majority of the levy. My reading of this is that the Government were trying to get their forces into armour. It was not as well distributed as in many other armies: the book refers to the glee the Scottish knights accepted a gift fro the French of 1200 suits of armour in 1385. The Scottish suffered badly in the middle 1300's from having unvisored helmets - I see no reason why this did not continue. The spear was 12 - 14 feet long. |

Osprey has the "Scottish and Welsh Wars". I ordered it as well as the "Hundred Years War" and the "Pictish Warrior." Save on shipping when you buy three...that and I am an Osprey Junky! :) Thanks for the help and insight fellas! John |

What did the Scots wear? A look of Doom Gloom and Dispare on their faces. (you would too if you lived in Scotland) |

In a book entitled "Flodden (9 September 1513)" - can't recall the publisher, but I am pretty certain it was not an Osprey - the color plates showed pretty much what has been cescribed above: in addition, the front rank pikemen wore plate at least to the waist, and carried large pavices that covered them to the eyes when their pikes were presented. The Highlander archer they showed had a longbow, a cap helm, a two-handed Claymore over his back, a mail shirt and bare legs and feet. There was a "borderer" with a light crossbow, in fairly light armor as well (both Scots and English Borderers dressed alike for the main part). I never owned that book, a friend of mine did: John McEwan, as I recall: perhaps he still has his copy MtM |

I think the magazine was Military History Illustrated, but a few years ago they had an article on Pinkie Cleugh |
