The first book linked below is a compilation of tactical "Experiments" by Lt. John Russell. In the second linked book (The Tactical Regulator), Russell calculates in 1810 the timings of those experiments and then applies those timings to various movements and actions in the drill manual. These are primary source documents which are along the same lines as the time-and-motion-study books produced for wargamers by George W. Jeffrey (Tactics and Grand Tactics of the Napoleonic Wars, 1982, edited by Ned Zuparko) and Imperial Bayonets by George Nafziger, 1996. (Russell's books were not known to Jeffrey, and were not known, or, at least, not referenced by Nafziger).

A Series of Military Experiments of Attack and Defence: Made in Hyde-Park, in 1802, Under the Sanction of His Royal Highness the Commander in Chief, with Infantry, Cavalry, and Artillery : and in the Island of Jersey, in 1805, by Permission of Lieutenant-General Andrew Gordon, with Notes, Remarks and Illustrations

By Lt. John Russell
