Finally this weekend I set up some shots of the nearly completed necropolis. You can see the added photos here: link It is a hodge-podge of time periods, but I consider this a compilation of a larger area of tombs like at Abydos where construction and burials took place over time. Besides, it is really just terrain to place figures on. This is a section of the eventual pyramid construction site, and will represent older kingdom burials and places to spawn mummies. The ruined temple with the crumbling pyramid is not complete, and I set up the pieces temporarily, using some rubble and sand for the photos. I have to work out how to stick the blocks and rubble around to a substructure and have it look like it is half buried. I need more diggers! Please, Blue Moon, make the worker figures from the Mummy box set available separately! |

Now that's a lot of work! You did plans for every building? |
artslave | 16 Dec 2007 12:24 a.m. PST |
The plans for the basic tomb structure comes from Cadwgan, who was kind enough to share. I've taken them and added post and lintels, porches, different pyramid shapes and entryways. The interior decoration is a combo of my scribbles and painting and some hieroglyphic fonts from here: greywolf.critter.net/fonts.htm These were provided by Gungner, and many helpful links on Egyptian tombs were provided by Cacique Caribe, so this is a group TMP project. Kind of a cool thing you got here, the Editor! Thanks for the kind words, everyone. Now, for the pyramid, and the real tricky part! This is just going to be a sidebar to the central theme of a pyramid and temple complex under construction. |

Thanks everyone. I started this at the end of October, so no speed demon, to be sure! Most of these structures would probably be filled or at least partially filled with rubble to deter thieves, but what fun is that? I also have room to expand with more tombs if I get the next phase built. Can anyone suggest figures that might stand in as workers? I have the ones that are in the Blue Moon set. I also have a few other Egyptian types I could throw in, but they have guns, not shovels. How about the Old Glory Middle Eastern Mob figures. Would they pass as Early 20th C. era Egyptian peasant workers? |

Impressive! I'd love to play in a game with that setup. |

I did it again! Gungnir! I must have some mental block on your name. Sorry. I hope you do get a chance, mweaver. I hope I get a chance, too! (make pyramid, paint figures, play-test scenario, get to con) |

Good stuff, I was watching a show on the Discovery channel on Egypt. Make me think of what it would have been like in the 1800s. |

Hey Artslave, Brigade Games do an archaeologist and assistants pack which includes diggers: link Westwind and Eureka do civilians, and although not 'Diggers' they do fulfil out the usual 'non combatant role. The Westwind figures are still available from OldGlory25s if you have trouble geting them elsewhere. |
artslave | 16 Dec 2007 5:58 p.m. PST |
Thanks, Stirling Moose. That Brigade pack looks very useful! I'll go check to see what Westwind might have. I was under the impression that OG was no longer stocking them. Maybe it was just that they were wiped out at Historicon. I assume it would be in the "Chaos in Cairo" range. Eureka civilians? I don't think I've ever seen them. I'll check it out. Non-combatants could be carrying things, or other jobs on the dig site. |

Great stuff. Love to have some of that for my Aegyptus games. |
Andrew Walters | 16 Dec 2007 10:07 p.m. PST |
Beautiful. I had to call the whole family into the office to look. How did you make those interiors look like plaster? You didn't plaster the walls and then hand paint the interior artwork, did you? I would have inkjet printed the wall art and glued it on, but it would be flat and look like inkjet printing. Yours looks hand-painted. Please tell me you didn't hand paint it. Amazing. Andrew |
artslave | 17 Dec 2007 12:36 a.m. PST |
OK, Andrew, I won't tell you that I plastered the interior walls on several tombs and hand painted the murals. Also, I won't tell you most of the hieroglyphs are hand done, as well. The other murals are watercolor pencil and paints on heavy drawing paper, cut to size and glued onto the foamcore walls. I will tell you that two tombs are mostly done with printed hieroglyphs from the link above, to which I added some hand coloring. This feels a bit like cheating, but I had fun composing the text. (it is very naughty) Glad you liked it. BTW, If I did paint walls, I did it before the structure was stuck to the base so I didn't have to reach a brush through a doorway. That would just be crazy. (well, crazier) |
Mr Pumblechook | 17 Dec 2007 3:01 p.m. PST |
They are very nice. I'm going to have to do some more (especially one or two with those pylons at the front, and different, pointier pyramid tops. |
Mr Pumblechook | 17 Dec 2007 3:06 p.m. PST |
For the partially buried look, one option to experiment with is to cut down/sand down/whatever the blocks, glue them down, then put a little putty/paper mache/whatever around them, but then pour sand over to partially cover them and blend them in. The trick then is to have some watered down PVA glue with a little surface tension breaker (liquid soap or similar) in a mister bottle and spray a couple of coats over the sand. It doesn't disturb the sand so it looks natural, but to locks it down. |

Artslave, Here are the links to the Eureka stuff: link link link link And yes the OldGlory25s still have/had the Chaos in Cairo range available. |
artslave | 17 Dec 2007 11:16 p.m. PST |
That is a good suggestion, Cadwgan. I want a look like Sennedjem's tomb, with that pointy pyramid over a crumbled exterior structure. picture Thanks Stirling Moose. I found the Chaos in Cairo figures, and checked out the Eureka villagers. The Old Glory Revolting Mideast Mob could also work, but I'd have to fashion shovels. So far, the Brigade pack is a definite. |

Great to see how nicely this is getting along! Congrats on your progress, Artslave. |
