A selection of pics of real thatched roofs, and my thoughts about them: link |

Well I recently bought some grass strands from the craft shop that I wanted to use as vegetation on model bases. See what I mean here picture You could stick that stuff to a card base and paint it or leave the colour as is? It basically means your practically making a miniature thatched roof because to get the depth you would need lots of layers. Not sure how else to do it. |

Germy, I tried that, with flax, but it got way to course for my taste. Besides that, I could not manage to get only the ends to show, I always ended up with just strands next to and over each other. But please note that my solution is just a suggestion, do what you feel works best for you! |

Anybody tried old hessian rope / string? It's the right colour – (Don't get the green nylon stuff.) I've used it for standing long grass etc on models in the past. all you do is cut off a short section, then seperate all the individual strands. Cheap too! |

Tried it, not straight enough. |

in the WAB rule book they recomend running a comb through strips of fake fur soaked with watered down glue. I have not tried it yet, but it sounds good. |

I make a very good thatched roof by using a commercially textured gesso "gel" that has fibres in it. |

Faux fur
teddybear fur for some
coated with a mix of PVA glue and water. It becomes rock hard and can be drybrushed once dry. picture picture picture link Fons |

I made a passable thatched roof using SuperSculpy. I basically put strips of clay across the roof and then sculpted the thatch texture into the surface. I found that lightly "combing" the clay with a moist brass bristle brush gave the right texture – it just takes a light touch. the ends of the thatch rows were indented with the same bristle brush to give them the right texture. Then it was just a matter of baking, painting, and washing. |

Howdie. I used a modified version of the method Feudal linked to to produce the thatch style roof shown in the cover image: ironivangames.com I did a couple with strips, but it was easier to just glue on a single piece :) I also cheated with a lighter shade towel, and a faster painting method (spray painted it, then drybrushed after it dried). I think for that short, tight thatch (hmmmm
. what was I talking about here?) you (Gungir) linked to, you probably would do well with any "short" towel material, rather than "long" towel material, and use single pieces, not strips. But there are a lot of good ideas already on this thread
