OK – I've searched through the messages boards and I didn't find and exact answer to this so
I'm moving back into 25-28mm ACW. I have a bunch of Old Glory 25mm ACW packs I started painting for BaB (skirmish) but now plan to go with regimental level rules instead – 6 figures per 50mm square base (GW "large monster" bases), 4 bases per unit. I want to get some other manufacturers figures besides Old Glory. I don't plan on mixing figures in a single regiment but might mix regiments of different manufacturers into brigades. From what I've read, it seems that Sash & Saber 25mm are about the same size as the Old Glory 25's. I used to have some Foundry but they seemed small compared to OG. I heard that Redoubt are giants compared to OG, but then I read somewhere that Redoubt mixes well with Sash & Saber which conflicts with other things I've heard about S&S. I've also heard that Dixon is on the small side, Renegade is big (almost 30mm) and I'm not sure about Front Rank. Any help would be appreciated. I want to get a Christmas list made up :) Thanks! |

Dave, Redoubt and Old Glory are dead ringers for size and heft. I have them in the same Confederate units and on the same stand for variety and it is difficult to tell the difference. I'm not sure how well they would work in the same unit for USA but certainly would work together in different units. I use Sash & Saber for Union units. They are noticeably smaller and less hefty than OG or Redoubt (more like Foundry in size but with smaller heads) but work well on the same table if not in the same unit. Renegade are nice figures but are bigger and heftier than OG, Redoubt, Foundry or S&S. Dixon are shorter than OG and the sculpting style is dramatically different (heftier with pumkin heads and rumpled cloths) but have a wide variety of figures. Everyone has their own ideas about what makes a good figure/unit but I wouldn't have too much trouble having any of the above on the same table if not in the same unit. Hope this helps, Bill. |

Excellent analysis. I will save it for my next ACW project. |

I love the Sash & Saber 25mm. I only have a few units as I am getting (More like gone head first) into 40mm. I also have Dixon and love the Dwarf like heads as they paint up very nice. Bill is spot on with his commments. If I ever go back to 25mm I will also use Redoubt. VR James Mattes |

This basically echoes the sentiments of the others. I just recently tried something that related to this very topic. Most of my 25mm federals are Old Glory and all of my CS forces had been exclusively S&S. I recently acquired another gamer's collection and had to remount them to fit in with mine. For the Federals I just took all of them and mixed them up Mark Fenlon, Renegade, S&S, Old Glory, Foundry, and a few other makers. It looks quite good. Ill post a photo or 2 when I get home tonight. However, this method was not working as well with the CS figures. I think this is due to the varying accoutrements and uniforms. I grouped them in units by manufacturer and it did the trick. They do not stand out on the table at all next to my S&S CS forces. Sean |

IMHO Renegades should be used seperately in their own units, and the same for the Sash and Saber due to their respective sizes and casting styles. Most of the rest could be mixed to your personal tastes. Redoubts line is huge and covers just about everything, and is very good to boot!! |

Somehow, the ACW seems to be one of those historical periods where one can mix in a variety of different figure brands into the same regiment. The result is a nice looking "campaign appearance" to the unit with minimal uniformity, other than the uniforms themselves. I did this for my ACW armies back when I painted them (1992-1994) using Connoisseur, Firing Line, Dave Alsop Old Glory, Eagle, Dixon and a few others. Redoubt, Foundry, S&S and some of the other brands mentioned in this thread didn't exist at the time, so I can't comment on how well they would fit with other brands. But I think that the concept of mixing up figures would still work with todays newer figures. Those Redoubt figures are very nice. |
