Magnificent !

I did not even know this list was here. On "another forum" that is too tightly moderated for my taste, their archive and search functions are either unwieldy and inefficient – or merely not working at all. So your many wonderful references there are often hard to find.

But here … all is perfectly easy to find.

Thank you so very very much !

Out of curiosity are you and Steven neighbours ?

Wags,

We are brothers in research.

Big Al

von Winterfeldt24 Nov 2009 4:26 a.m. PST

Steve Smith for President, I would vote for you.

Question : There exists also another regimental history of Bavarian infantry regiment Nr. 5 by Gerneth and Kiesling, so far I could track only volume 2 (starting from 1804) – is Nr. 1 also available.

and to go on with Bavarians

Kriegsgeschichte von Bayern unter König Maximillian Josph I, so far I have only the volume 1810 till the siege of Thorn 1813, sechstes Buch, I found also the next volume 1813 – 1815, any other volumes available??

Steven H Smith24 Nov 2009 5:32 a.m. PST

V-Dubya,

Völderndorff – only vols 3 & 4 are presently available.

Gerneth. Vol 1 – 1722-1804:

I try to only post here vols which I have NOT posted already.

von Winterfeldt24 Nov 2009 6:02 a.m. PST

I am awe struck that you still know what mega amount of links you posted or not – thanks for Gerneth – which is however the abreviated – shortened version of volume I – which seemingly had in the first edition much more text, over 600 pages.

Billy Bones24 Nov 2009 7:31 a.m. PST

Steve or should I say big Al I thought you knew one another, when the other site was discussed it was to obvious.
It seems you have another admirer as well.

Wagram

V-Dubya,

'German Too' would be a good starting point for your search. Thank Big Al's private reserve for that effort.

Steven H Smith24 Nov 2009 8:30 a.m. PST

Wags,

Are you trying to blow my cover again?

Now, Wags, you asked if we were 'neighbors', not if we knew one another! Indeed, we know one another. I know many of the posters here on TMP – there are some of them that might even think I do not know who they are, but indeed I do! <;^}

However, it is not necessary for me to know someone before I will provide information they seek. I have even provided information directly to persons I do not like.

Yours, in firm research,

Big Al

Billy Bones24 Nov 2009 10:38 a.m. PST

Big Al,

You should be made a saint (I'm sure Hans-Karl would agree) the information that you provide is indeed priceless and for those unfortunate not to own the various works and to be able to hold the book in their hands it must be a joy.
I have ten printed books on the subject and many more electronic ones thanks to you.

Wagram or Wags if you prefer.

von Winterfeldt24 Nov 2009 1:38 p.m. PST

Truley amazing, it might be usefull to find out what kind of uniforms the Bavarians did wear at Hohenlinden, a truley vexing research task.

Chuvak24 Nov 2009 3:40 p.m. PST

Sainthood – good idea !

Wagram,

If I could remember my sign-in data for more than 3 days, and didn't constantly start new identities, you would perhaps more quickly recognize me. My employer's security detachment is constantly "delousing" (or whatever they call it) my laptops and replacing my phones. So I am left with my own poor memory for such data.

We have corresponded several times over the years, and have often found ourselves in strong agreement on many topics of Napoleonic history. Also, you have quite often been extremely generous in your assistance to my poor efforts at research.
Indeed, I would propose you as well for "Napoleonic Sainthood".

Indeed, the same applies to our v. Winterfeldt. He was the one who told me, quite some years ago, that I would be missing a huge amount of information if I did not improve my German to a level of at least modest competence, and who guided me to sources in that language. He has also sent to me period uniform illustrations which I cherish dearly.
So, I would add him to the list of my "Saints".

With kindest regards, and my most sincere thanks, to all three of you "Saints",
:-)

Billy Bones24 Nov 2009 3:50 p.m. PST

What more can I say nominated for Napoleoic Sainthood with those doyens of Napoleonic research Big Al and Hans Karl what an honour I am truly flabbergasted.

For those not in the USA, Dodge's Great Captains – Napoleon; A History of the Art of War, all four volumes can be read on line via Internet Archive, and three of the volumes can be downloaded using:

Volume 2 – via Archive to Google so it is read-only outside the USA which is a full view of the pages and is better than no view at all.
