From the paintings and images used by model-makers' kits, there seems to be a sort of Mediterranean tan color scheme on many Japanese ships. Is this right? What color were their hulls in, say, 1942? I realize that carrier decks were painted and repainted any number of times. thanks! |

Japanese ships were painted according to the shipyard in which they were built, or had their last refit. The colors range from a mid blue-grey to a very dark grey. Some carriers were painted green, but I've not been able to track down which ones or when. I've not seen Japanese ships in any sort of tan scheme. Try poking around this site: shipcamouflage.com/BB I know Model Master used to make Japanese colors in their maritime line of paints, but apparently they aren't all available any more, or at least that's what my FLGS tells me. Check out the following list, from #4250 to 4256 are japanese: link |

The Japanese Navy with the exception of later war green dazzle schemes for carriers and transports, primarily painted their warships an overall dark grey specific to the Navy yard that last worked on the ship. Yokuska, Sasebo, yokohama and Maiziru were IIRC, the four yards. All the greys are similar and are available from Snider & Short as enamels and Model Master/Testor as acrylics at last I saw. This link includes at least one of the yard greys and they are all very very similar with the difference being slightly darker or lighter in tone. link |

link This is a discounter selling the range. Note that on smaller scale ships, say 1/2400 and down, teh colors will appear darker. In my experience, the Maizuru yard grey is the lightest of the bunch. |

Here's another TMP thread on the same subject. Some of the links may be duplicates of what McKinistry and others already listed. TMP link |

Does anyone know about the Daihatsu landing craft/barges? Were they a grey colour as well? Cheers, Pro

I think they were grey early in the war but certainly by late 43 on the New Guinea coast, the supply versus interdiction battles between Allied MTB's and IJN & IJA barge traffic along with the risky air situation had the barges and such using the varying shades of green dazzle type camo schemes. Try Google images and I think you can find some examples. |
