OK. Bear with me on this . . . * What if there has already been an evolutionary offshoot of humanity? * What if that new branch of humanity prefers warmer temperatures and higher concentrations of greenhouse gases? * What if they were already working on "terraforming" Earth (yes, redundant phrase) to conform to their preferences AND to slowly nudge the rest of us out of existence? Though the film "The Arrival" deals with aliens making such an effort, the idea of an evolutionary branch of humanity sounds more acceptable to me. QUESTION: Could this become an appealing premise for any sort of gaming, conspiracy RPG, or such? CC TMP link |

Covert Walrus | 09 Nov 2007 12:00 a.m. PST |
Not a bad idea for a game or otherwise CC. Of course, there would be some obvious biological differences in this offshoot, so they would look pretty conspicuous. . . . |
Cacique Caribe | 09 Nov 2007 12:18 a.m. PST |
Any suggestions on what those differences might be? If they were plainly visible, they would not be able to do their covert work though. CC |

If it is, then I'm certainly a Neanderthal, so to speak, as I loath heat, summer, and sun. I'm a late fall to early spring kind of guy. |
tnjrp | 09 Nov 2007 12:54 a.m. PST |
And I must be the camouflaged version of the "new breed" since I SO hate the cold
Therefore with me as an assumed early generation mutant, how about: bald, tall, thin (I wish!) to star with, then add lots of veins near the surface of the skin and maybe some nocturnal adaptations (mostly so that you can get around dark skintone to paint the veined skin) such as "cat eyes"? |
tnjrp | 09 Nov 2007 12:57 a.m. PST |
Darn, pressed submit too early
So that's for the look part. For the RPG, you don't obviously need the pale skin tone but still it could be used to liken these "hotties" to vampires or some such for added confusion and paranoia factor. For a wargame, I suppose a standard gang fight thing with some skrewy weather and terrain effects (remember that global warming is assumed to cause extreme weather) thrown in would be the way to go. |

On danger of getting dawghoused or CA'ed: (Remember, THIS IS JUST A GAME IDEA, etc., etc.) What if the people of Saharan Africa were that new breed of man, and they've been slowly trying to spread desert like conditions. The "Ice Agers" (us) are fighting a secret war against them (the so-called "Hot War"), but covering it up as local unrest and plague. Other Ice Agers are supporting the NewBreed financially, either unaware of the true stakes or bought off in some way. |

lugal hdan's idea goes beyond a game and into the short story or novel idea. "The Arrival" film aside, lugal hdan should run with the premise and expand it into a fascinating novella. Give it a try- put it down on paper and let people read it. As I said, it would be fascinating. |

I think the next people would: Live in jungle areas or highly populated/polluted areas. Would wear heavier clothes as they like the heat and such. Would be as "driven" as Greenpeace, but in the opposite direction. Greenpeace could actually be a covert government agency opposed to the nexts. Al Gore is their head (shudder :0) with the government not trying to let the populace know about the nexts in fear of worldwide panic, etc
You could put in some good conspiracy plots in here

Lugal Hdan, CA possibilities aside, it would definitely fit in with the current "Out of Africa" theories, where each successive evolutionary offshoot originates from that continent! CC |
Klebert L Hall | 09 Nov 2007 9:49 a.m. PST |
For a game, sure. Otherwise, you'd have to be talking about *really* higher temperatures / atmospheric gasses – humans are adaptable critters, little things like +/- 20 degrees or 1% CO2 aren't going to kill us off. -Kle. |

Do it in the future, several hundred years hence. The poles have melted into a temperate environ and the surviving Homo sapiens have fled to the poles. The separate Nation-States of New Arctica and New Atlantis (Antarctica) are bracing for a fresh series of raids from the agressive and dominant Homo aequatoris. Things are looking bleak for Homo sapiens and that's when the ETs show up. But who are they going to ally with? Maybe none, and they want the Earth all to themselves? Note to Michael Crichton: This is mine! Keep away! |

CC, assuming a very great temperature increase on the line sof the Permian age, the Nexts would require some extensive cooling structures for themselves, and a large lung capacity even if they are not aquatic. My pick would be barrel chested humans, with large noses that are either hairy in nature or perhaps with closable nostrils like a camel; Perhaps the head would be different in shape to accomodate larger sinus cavities to lose heat with in these cases. |

Cacique, if you're looking for 'evolved human' ideas, you might want to look at Stephen Baxter's Flux, Coalescent or some of his short stories for ideas. Most of them are a bit more
out there
than simply having a higher preferred temperature, though. |

>Just trying to give you the benefit of the doubt.< Thanks, but I don't need it. All that you're saying is that you've crossposted from a group where the message applies to a group where it's off topic. Not that I mind an off topic discussion that much, it's just that this group appears to be off-topic heaven and I got fed up with it. I mean, Jeez man!, we've even got a long topic going about "Tunnels and Trolls". I know that the majority of the posters in this group don't know *anything* about the "pulp magazine" era, but I'm sure that *you* know better. |
