Hi Guys The question is by what point did they over paint the invasion stripes? I have seen some images, where they started covering up the invasion stripes in stages, with the white being over painted with green. But not entirely. I'm just trying to get a handle on how long those stripes where on the planes. |

I think it depended on the squadron. I've seen some where the stripes on the upper surfaces were painted out while the lower ones lingered. Wyatt |

Interesting question. I have always assumed that they left them on for the duration of the aircraft's "life." At what point did replacement aircraft NOT get "invasion stripes?" |

The order to remove stripes from the wings said that they should be removed between 25th August and 10th September 1944. At around the same time, the stripes on the top and sides of the fuselage were usually overpainted. The remaining part of the fuselage stripes remained for a couple of months, but were pretty much all gone by the end of the year. |
