I'm looking for something in 1/48, 28mm scale, tilt-rotor, or helicopter, that looks vaguely futuristic, and isn't that expensive: $20 USD max. |

The corvus vtol here may work

I have a Corvus, the thing is a pain to get together and is not cast that well (so if you are into doing more than a little extra modelling, gap & bubble filling on your resin, you will be happy with it.) Old Crow, however
. well, let's just say they have many extremely happy customers on this very website

The Corvus is closer to 25mm. I use mine for Legions of Steel/Planetstorm. DLD made one but at 100 bucks it is way too expensive. The best bets are a 1:48 scale Osprey tilt roter or kit bashing. At one point Mongoose was going to make some drop ships for SST, but I never heard of them finishing one. Armorcast is currently working on a VTOL but it is in the design stage. I'm hoping they have some sketches on their forum soon. If you are looking for a VTOL that can carry several squads the Mechwarrior Dropship works. It can hold 4 10 man squads – one in each mech-bay. While they have gotten cheaper, they still run about 60 bucks on Ebay. There is a Soviet helicopter that might work.(Havoc or Hokum or something. Having a brain lock at the moment) Either just build it as is, or possibly remove the roters and add stubby wings and some tilt engines. I found the jet engines for a GI Joe Skyhawk on Ebay that would work. |

I've bought 3 Captain Scarlet Hummingbird Helicopter toys to convert into large VTOL craft. They're made by Bandai and are a single seat vehicle for action figures but with a little work I hope they'll make cool landers each carrying at least a couple of squads. |

Toposolitario made a cardstock tilt-jet transport that you can get for free: link He did it in several different liveries. |
Kilkrazy | 20 Oct 2007 1:38 a.m. PST |
That cardstock dropship looks brilliant. You can get a plastic model kit of the V22 Osprey in 1/48 scale from Italeri
hlj.com/product/ITA2622 That is probably the easiest option. You could replace/convert the rotor engines with anti-grav or jet pods. There was also a brilliant post-WW2 British design, the Fairey Rotodyne. I can't find it in 1/48 scale but it could provide ideas for conversions. link 1/48 is about the right scale for 28mm figures. |

This gunship from Ground Zero Games is rather cool. link |
TonicNH | 20 Oct 2007 7:44 a.m. PST |
Even cooler from GZG link scroll down until you hit SF25-56 Tactical Interface Transport Unfortunate acronym though

If you want a big one (ie one that can carry vehicles) and don't mind a bit of kit bashing, there is always this: link It's listed at $25 USD but from what I hear from people in the states you can usually get it for less than $20. USD In fact there are several for under $15 USD on ebay at the moment auction If only they were that cheap in the UK :( |

"There was also a brilliant post-WW2 British design, the Fairey Rotodyne." Auughh!!! The Rotodyne
what a nightmare of a craft. The jet engines exhausted through the rotor tips, making it hellaciously loud, among other things. |
Kilkrazy | 20 Oct 2007 9:25 a.m. PST |
All jets were loud in the 1950s. They would have got the noise down if it had been developed further. |

The GZG Tactical Interface Transport is a dcent size to use as a transport. The Corvus can land one squad in practicality whereas the TIT can land a platoon or a couple of squads plus a light vehicle. As I work for Sikorsky Aircraft and am former 101st the difference in sizes would be between a UH-60 Blackhawk and an H-53 series helicopter. However, both are a real pain to put together. The TIT comes in a number of pieces (about 20)- it makes the Corvus look easy to put together although the GZG casting is better. If you have even a little bit of modeling experience you can put the TIT together. The TIT is just the right size, IMHO, for 25/28mm gaming- its big enough to be impressive without being over the top. I'll see if I can get a picture up of the various VTOLs/landing craft I have. |
Brandlin | 20 Oct 2007 10:22 a.m. PST |
OK, I know that what i'm about to recommend is way outside the price range, and i dont even play the rules system or army its designed for
but there is just something about this dropship that say
YES!
to me
forgeworld.co.uk/orca.htm
but i wouldn't pay THAT for it

Here are some size comparisons of the various futuristic VTOLs out there. Note I have none of the Old Crow landers/attack craft but they are coming- will post size comparison of them up when they get here. Mini's use are a GZG UNC trooper and a Mongoose Starship Trooper. VTOL's shown: GI Joe Thunderhawk, GZG TIT, GZG Military Assault Lander (for 6mm), Grendel Corvus, GZG Civilian VTOL, GZG AV-6 Assault VTOL, GZG AV-9A2 Attack VTOL, GZG Police PAtrol Air Car, and GZG Maverick Police/Security Fan Car 1- Overall shot- above and side picture 2- GZG Civilian VTOL, GZG AV-6 Assault VTOL, GZG AV-9A2 Attack VTOL, GZG Police PAtrol Air Car, and GZG Maverick Police/Security Fan Car picture 3- (Top View) GZG TIT, GZG Military Assault Lander (for 6mm), Grendel Corvus picture 4- (Front View) GZG TIT, GZG Military Assault Lander (for 6mm), Grendel Corvus picture 5- GI Joe Thunderhawk picture |

I didn't think the Corvus was hard to put together. Mostly needed some fileing here and there. Still got 1 more to do sometime in the future. Like the painting in the second pic from Blackhawk1. |
kaydet | 20 Oct 2007 11:51 a.m. PST |
Whoa. Thanks a lot guys! Looks like I'll probably just kit bash the fuselage of the Osprey to make it look _not_ like an osprey
but still a tiltrotor. |
Topkick890 | 20 Oct 2007 1:06 p.m. PST |
In pic 2 what are the figs used for size comparison? |
Blackhawk1 | 20 Oct 2007 2:58 p.m. PST |
In Pic 2 they are a GZG UNSC trooper and a Mongoose Starship Troopers fig. Thanks for the compliment WOlver! ANd DOH
I forgot about the Orca
I got one of them too! |
Captain Apathy | 22 Oct 2007 11:38 a.m. PST |
Nice work Blackhawk. Thanks. I happen to have the GZG dropship, the one you have painted white with a red stripe (the reverse of Starsky and Hutch). It is a nice hunk of resin. It is also nice to see it compared to other dropships I have looked at. |
chironex | 22 Oct 2007 5:36 p.m. PST |
Brandlin, good thing you didn't mention the Manta
I hate vtols that look like chopper airframes, I just HAVE to put a rotor on them
|
elijahdprophet | 22 Oct 2007 5:57 p.m. PST |
Anyone have pics of that GI Joe ship painted up? I mean, I don't totally lack imagination, and I can see the uses, but seeing it done up right would be sweet. |
