Nic tells me that the set of 12 figures and a Durham boat will sell for $A75, approximately, and he needs 40 subscribers to get the ball rolling.
It will be based on the Leutze painting, in all its glory. I will NOT ask the sculptor to "correct" any uniforms. I want the diorama piece exactly as shown in the painting. I will ask for Perry 28mm compatability.

I am very well pleased with Eureka quality, BTW, particularly multi piece castings. The Assyrian 4-horse chariot, for example, is so well made that it almost clicks together.

Sign up now for this, all the Cool Kids are doing it.

nycjadie17 Oct 2007 6:56 a.m. PST

Done. Thanks John. Great idea.

Scott MacPhee17 Oct 2007 6:58 a.m. PST

Done.

aecurtis Fezian17 Oct 2007 7:00 a.m. PST

The logic of lowering the numbers of orders required to produce these vignettes, while having increased the overall number and number of subscribers for proper wargame figures, escapes me.

I can't use it on the table, so I'll pass, thanks.

Allen

GiloUK17 Oct 2007 7:09 a.m. PST

Done.

Skeptic17 Oct 2007 7:29 a.m. PST

Could the boat be made available separately, and would the hull be a resin casting?

elcid109917 Oct 2007 7:34 a.m. PST

I'm in on this one too.

John the OFM17 Oct 2007 7:37 a.m. PST

Skeptic, that is a question for Nic. That is not my call.

Skeptic17 Oct 2007 7:45 a.m. PST

@John: OK, I was only asking since you seemed to be organizing the subscription, hence might have had some idea. I'll ask Nic, then.

nycjadie17 Oct 2007 7:59 a.m. PST

I can't imagine the boat being metal, but you never know.

John the OFM17 Oct 2007 8:05 a.m. PST

What's the Moby Dick whaleboat made out of? Isn't it resin?

60th RAR17 Oct 2007 8:18 a.m. PST

Thw whaleboat and Hawaiian canoes are indeed resin.

Skeptic17 Oct 2007 8:23 a.m. PST

Thanks for the answers! I'll ask Nic about partial subscriptions …

GiloUK17 Oct 2007 9:14 a.m. PST

Anyone have any idea how big this boat would be?

John the OFM17 Oct 2007 9:26 a.m. PST

George W was 6' tall. How many "Georges" long is the boat? grin

Seriously, I see that I will have to get my Google-fu going on "Durham boat", or, just scale it from Leutze's painting.

rusty musket17 Oct 2007 10:03 a.m. PST

Who is Nic, if I want to participate in this excellent idea? Thanks!

Craig

Don Johnson17 Oct 2007 10:10 a.m. PST

John, I've read heights for Washington from 6 foot 2 inches to 6'4", as well as being, by most accounts, a '… large, well-formed man …', for whatever that's worth.

In a world where IIRC 5'6" qualified one to be a grenadier, GW was a big dude any way you look at it.

Didn't Fischer describe a Durham boat in washington's Crossing? I'll have to check . . .

Don Johnson17 Oct 2007 10:13 a.m. PST

Nic is Nic Robson, owner of Eureka Miniatures in Austrailia.

60th RAR17 Oct 2007 10:13 a.m. PST

rusty,

Just click in the link in the first post and "buy" the boat. Once it makes the grade nic will usually email you to let you know. You do not get charged until it is ready to ship.

rusty musket17 Oct 2007 10:20 a.m. PST

Thanks Don and Aaron.

Wikipedia, for what it is worth, says a Durham boat was 60 feet long. That is 9 to 10 George Washingtons and a bit larger than the painting would convey.

John the OFM17 Oct 2007 10:39 a.m. PST

Artist's license…

nycjadie17 Oct 2007 10:48 a.m. PST

"a Durham boat was 60 feet long."

That explains how horses were moved across.

Skeptic17 Oct 2007 11:15 a.m. PST

Even at 1/2 – 3/4 length, it would work as a bateau …

That being said, if OG already make one, then it would just be an alternative bateau model …

Grelber17 Oct 2007 6:42 p.m. PST

I once read that, though the boat in Leutze's painting was supposed to be a Durham boat, Leutze was painting in Germany, and had no example of an American boat to go by, so he actually painted the sort of boat used on the Rhine.
Grelber

Skeptic18 Oct 2007 9:12 a.m. PST

Nic has suggested that the boat will be available separately, at perhaps $50 USD AUD (more than he had thought, since the boat is going to be larger than originally-anticipated).

John the OFM19 Oct 2007 5:46 a.m. PST

As the originator of this project, I want the boat to match the painting.
For once, "Screw historical accuracy".
I do NOT want "Washington as he REALLY looked". I want Leutze's painting.
I WANT Washington's pose.
I WANT the ethnic and regimental mix.
I WANT the woman rowing (and doing all the work).
I WANT the guys fending off the ice, and huddling miserably in the thwarts, and getting sick over the side.

I WANT the entire "look and feel" of the Leutze painting, with its evocative "The times that try men's souls.." look, and Howard Fast desperation.

I do NOT want a generic boat, with a vaguely AWI feel.

If you want an accurate boat, commission your own, and don't hijack MY 100 clup project. *gtin*

John the OFM19 Oct 2007 6:36 a.m. PST

*gtin* is Serbo-Croatian for grin

Skeptic19 Oct 2007 7:41 a.m. PST

@John: I don't know whom it is that you're accusing of hijacking your project – I was only reporting what Nic's reply was.

I would be fine with most any size of boat, and smaller would actually be better for me, since it could then double as a generic bateau.

P.S.: What is 'clup' in Serbo-Croatian?

Skeptic19 Oct 2007 7:44 a.m. PST

P.P.S.: If you want the boat to be as in the painting, then you ought to contact Nic.

Again, I made no suggestion whatsoever as to dimensions, and can only suppose that historical accuracy was either Nic's own idea, or somebody else's suggestion.

Thus, you may want to direct your *gtin* elsewhere …

Skeptic19 Oct 2007 8:21 a.m. PST

… perhaps at yourself for jumping to conclusions.

John the OFM19 Oct 2007 8:55 a.m. PST

Oh, quit trying to pick a fight, will you?
YOUR note above seems to suggest that you have contacted Nic, and afterwards Nic tells me that some have suggested that the size of the boat will have to change.
Forgive me if I put 2 and 2 together.

Skeptic19 Oct 2007 10:21 a.m. PST

Oh, quit trying to pick a fight, will you?

I was not trying to pick a fight, but to clarify.

For your part, why don't you quit throwing accusations around?

YOUR note above seems to suggest that you have contacted Nic, and afterwards Nic tells me that some have suggested that the size of the boat will have to change.

I contacted him further to YOUR suggestion, and asked about the separate availability of the boat. That is ALL.

'Contacting' (and reporting back) is *not* the same thing as 'making a suggestion'.

Forgive me if I put 2 and 2 together.

… and came up with 5 or 3, but not 4 …

Instead of making excuses, you might apologize, but then I wouldn't expect that coming from you …

John the OFM19 Oct 2007 10:28 a.m. PST

This is pointless.
Believe what you want to believe. I don't care.

Think whatever you want to think, just so long as you order a set. grin

nycjadie19 Oct 2007 10:52 a.m. PST

I'm looking forward to mine. How many have been ordered?

John the OFM19 Oct 2007 11:20 a.m. PST

Judging by response here, at least 10.
Then, there are those who order without posting here about it, and those who will stumble across it on the site, who never heard of TMP.

I intend to "delenda est Carthago" this project.

elcid109919 Oct 2007 4:01 p.m. PST

I intend to "delenda est Carthago" this project.

I'll be up for one of those too.

John the OFM19 Oct 2007 7:37 p.m. PST

I am pleased to note that "those who purchased this item also bought…" Stalins Half-Man Half-Ape Warriors
[100CLUBFAN06] "

Gamers have eclectic tastes…

Giles at home20 Oct 2007 1:27 a.m. PST

Isn't one idea for Nic to release two boats, one larger boat with the whole set and then another smaller one, which may well be a decent seller in its own right? A couple of generic 18th century sailor types could perhaps go with the smaller boat. That way we'd get the full Leutze project and then something more "gameable". Personally I'd buy both. This is NOT an attempt at any hijack (I'll buy anything even remotely AWI related), just a commercial suggestion if it looks like there is additional demand for a separate boat!

:^)

Nah – can you not see the obvious conversion potential for Culpepper Minutemen in No.1 walking out dress c.1777?

John the OFM20 Oct 2007 7:02 a.m. PST

Giles (and Skeptic).
I have NOTHING against a separate boat. I have long wanted bateaux, for all kinds of projects, from wolfe's Cove to Ticonderoga, to Valcour Island, to…
I simply do not want George stuck in a generic boat. Like I keep repeating, I want the painting.
I would also probably support a SEPARATE bateaux project.

nycjadie21 Oct 2007 8:55 a.m. PST

"Stalins Half-Man Half-Ape Warriors"

That would be me!

marco56 Supporting Member of TMP05 Jan 2016 7:48 p.m. PST

Was this set ever made?
Mark

Winston Smith08 Jan 2016 12:29 p.m. PST

Not that I know of.
I would also buy a Perry set that matchrs the OFM's (my) vision.
Or Fife and Drum.
Or King's Mountain.
First to come out with an EXACT copy of Leurze's painting gets my money.
And maybe the second one too.
