I'm after approximately 50 Hoplons (Hoplite shields) to go with some minaitures that are 28mm to 30mm tall.

Please point me in the right direction.

cheers

Amazon makes some nice big ones, which would be suitable for the 30mm end; 1st Corps makes good ones as well. Those are te ones out there with the best profile.

Hasslefree's is nicely modeled, but seems a little flat to me.

RAFM also sells weapon packs with Greek shields. 6 nice large hoplon shields are included in one pack with lots of other stuff. As these are for ture 25mm figures, they may be smaller than you wish, but I think they are a bit large for 25mm. Sells for $6 USD US.

I still like the Essex ones but not sure you do not have to special order them. The ones with the skirt are pretty need and they all take LBM transfers well.

Thread reserection!
I'd like to replace the shields of some Foundry hoplites-how do the Crusader ones fit in the the above recomendations?
What do people think would be the best replacement?
Thanks.

I wouldn't go Crusader, they are a bit crude. I hear 1st Crrps are very nice and well researched.

I like the size and profile of 1st Corps' aspis. Oh, wait: I said that.

I also like the size and profile of Old Glory's, which are very close to the original Foundry "Persian and Peloponnesian Wars" range shields (and LBMS covers the OG shields, too). 30 for six bucks?

Apparently, I haven't seen Crusader's yet. Huh. I must be slipping.

Hi Allen,

They are rather wide and fairly flat- a lot bigger in diameter than the Foundry shields, which is good and bad(bad since they won't match my Foundry minis with their silly shields).

In general I find I like Crusader's figures a lot, but I am accumulating a big box of unsuitable hoplons, scutae and and thureos, and the dodgy shields that come with both the pikemen and Numidians.

Tiberius – Try Black Tree Design – their hoplons are very large and should suit. Also see if the A&A Carthaginian spearmen's shields will be OK.

Simon – interested in your comment about Crusader shields as I did order their embossed phalangite shields which I like as they are far slimmer then others around. I prefer the A&A thureos or else the one by Essex with the javelins attached.

Cheers

Hi Garry, I received the non-embossed shields with my phalangites, which I didn't think looked very good. The lack of a depression on the back to take a fist, makes them hard to fit securely, too. I've not seen the embossed ones; I'm pleased to hear they are better. When I paint my Crusader phalangites, they will probably get Foundry shields, anyhow, so that they match my other phalangites.

For my Thurephoroi, I used a mixture of the Old Glory Thureos and the Essex ones you mentioned. I'm not much taken with the Crusader ones, beause I like to see a rim. Here they are:-

Simon – thanks, nice looking figures. Agree that it is time we had more choice with later peltasts. Have some A&A's to paint up with Crusader command (though may use the A&A light infantry command with different shields).

Have thought about using A&A Samnites as peltasts, especially as they lost their helmet feathers in transit!

I see that 1st Corps will have a good Successor range and I hope that Empire follow through with what look to be excellent figures. Impressed with Immortal Miniatures and hopefully they will venture into the later period as well.

Now if only someone will make a 'real' Pontic knight! At the moment am using A&A cataphracts (Palmyran) for the command and Battlestandard late Persians for the other stands.

Cheers and all the best for 09 (always enjoy your blog).

Hi Garry,

Those Empire figures have been a very long time coming (will they ever arrive?), and yesterday's Saleh Gripping Beast phalangite on the other thread looks brilliant and will probably fill that gap for me. The shields on them looked great…

Agreed re Pontics. We also need a range of big 28mm Parthians to ride down all those dodgy plastic Caesarians that I see everywhere I look…

Hi Richard, I've bought some MM minis, and they certainly are very nice minis, but I feel they are a little too small alongside the bigger ranges I generally collect.

Cheers, Simon
