I have ordered some of Eureka's whaleboats and crews. I was perhaps hoping to get some rules ideas for whaling. I remember seeing a whaling game going on at one of the Cons. I was intrigued by the "off beat theme," but was not able to participate in the game. Perhaps someone who played remembers some of the game mechanics and rules. I have contacted Eureka and drawn a blank.

Ataltl2,
I haven't received anything from you about this question on my e-mail. Can you please re-send your e-mail to us?

I just sent you an email on this subject. The discussions I had, were with Eureka USA. Rob tried to be helpful about rules, however I was left with the impression that the subject of rules was rather vague. I am in no way slighting you or your company. Your whaling miniatures are great. However turning a great model into a game was my ambition. I was hoping from some feedback from players in the whaling games at the cons. Surely you as the designer have some ideas.

Well, any rules will have to include a white whale….

You could include using killer whales to assist the hunt like they did in Eden.

I would be interested in rules for this as well so if you do find em post up a link.

I remember seeing the Eden documentary on the Killer Whales helping the Human whalers, facinating stuff! The Orcas would herd the whales into shallower waters to make it easier for the whalers.

John Rigley has run his terrific Moby Dick game at several conventions sponsered by Eureka. They are home rules. Don't know if he has published them.

There should be some special rules for a Greenpeace boat which tries to keep between the whaleboat and the whale :-)

(I know at least one person who has no problems with wargames (simulating humans killing other humans) but would find the idea of simulating humans killing whales extremely disturbing and disgusting.)

Sounds like a great idea for a once off game in my opinion though. Great for a convention. It would be nice to see the rules online somewhere.

If you are playing "Moby dick", then the whale wins. Your Greenpeace buddy should like that.

And if the Greenpeace player is over powered, just bring a French frigate to cool things down.

Check back issues of Wargames Illustrated or maybe Miniature Wargames for a whaling game. Only few hundred issues to scan. Maybe someone has an index. I have wanted to get the Eureka figs and do this too.

We struck that whale, the line paid out
But she gave a flourish with her tail
The boat capsized and four men were drowned
And we never caught that whale, brave boys
And we never caught that whale

"To lose those men", our captain said
"it grieves my heart full sore"
But we know the losing of that hundred barrel whale
Well, it grieved him ten times more, brave boys
It grieved him ten times more

Flagship Games' "Pirates" has rules for sea monsters…

I toyed with the idea of getting the Eureka whale boats to play a game, but gave the idea away.

There seems to be a bit of interest – any one interested in creating a set of rules together?

Thanks Bob and his dog. I found the article. Sometimes those old magazines do come in handy!

Create your own whale – simple to do, just get some Sculpey or similar product, sculpt your likeness of the whale to the best of your ability and pop in the oven, bake, cool, and paint. Only way I know to get a waterline model of a whale. Be sure and sculpt a tale, too. Did a 1/1200 whaling game years and years ago and people still remember it at the local group. Great fun and rules can be super simple. I think the ones we used fit – entire – on a 3x5 card.

Shelldrake- I owuld up for creating some rules for it!
