This is from about 2 years ago and I wrote it up for a different site (Dwarven Forge since I used their Sci-Fi stuff). However, it still had some decent pics and maybe someone will get an idea.

Went up to Havoc XXII in Mass the week of 31MAR – 02APR06. Always a nice little con which is about 85% mini's and 15% boardgames (No LARPing, CCG or RPG). It always draws about 250 – 300 people and is put on by Battlegroup Boston. I ran a Stargrunt scenario and used the multiple sets of sci-fi stuff as the underground base.

Table set-up was of an light industrial area on the edge of a starport. This was composed of a light refinery complex with an attached office HQ and the bonded warehouse surrounded by a fence. SOme hills, rubble, a secondary radar dish, piles of boxes, garbage skips, and so on were put on the table. The last 20% of the table held the 3 story underground complex.

The scenario was basically an underground base of insurgents has been found through intel. 2 or 3 known leaders were there. The entrance was known to be inside a "bonded warehouse" at the edge of the primary starport (a bonded warehouse normally has armed guards- so seeing a squad of armed men would arouse no suspicion). An ad-hoc unit of government forces are sent in to take out the base and capture/kill the leaders.

The players ran the government forces (6 squads: 1 heavy power armor in assualt VTOL, 1 Light power armor in assault VTOL, 1 light power armor in heavy APC, then 3 squads of veteran troppers in light APCs). I gave them about 5 minutes to come up with a battle plan and then off we went!

My friend Glenn ran the entire enemy force. The enemy force was semi-scripted- certain units could not move/activate until the players "tripped" certain events. We used a map to track underground and hidden movement of enemy forces. Additionally. the security consoles could possibly be accessed by specialists on the player team- some provided intel while other let them "use" security cameras to see sections of other levels.

Since this was an introduction game my goal was not to kill the players but to give them a good fight. As such all players were on the same side as it was felt that some players may have felt hamstrung running semi-scripted enemy forces- plus the players seemed to have more fun overall when they were all on the same side!

As a note- the 3rd level of the base has 3 curving corridor sections that appears to double back. This was actually described as a downward sloping corridor that led to non-essential barrack areas and an escape tunnel for the VIPs. The tunnel went up with the exit being the blue shipping container just outside the bonded warehouse which was the grey building on the table.

SHort version- the scenario went well but they never penetrated the 3rd level as we ran out of time. The players dithered on the ground level trying to mop-up remnants of the surface ground force. However, they did capture High Value Target 1 (HVT1) before game end which was the lead geneticist working on a biological weapon.

The set-up underground base- they players new what the complex looked like due to a fly-over of a drone with ground penetrating radar:

Enemy forces surprise the attackers with a tank destroyer coming from the warehouse (TD was destroyed the following turn by an attack VTOL missile strike):

A third of the way through the game- player forces command the table, a squad is clearing out a refining facility HQ of enemy forces while power armored troops are fighting in the warehouse:
picture

Player airborne forces capture the first floor of underground base to include the security center. Player technician attempts to access internal cameras while at the bottom a detached trooper leads prisoners out of the complex:
picture

Light powered armoor special forces, backed by a squad of heavy PA's, force a barricade and begin to spread out on the complexes 2nd floor. Down the corridor a heavy PA gauss gun has destroyed an internal security robot while light PA's engage human defenders:
picture

Light PA squad rushes the door to the biological lab- where they had seen HVT1 duck into. A light PA covers a corridor while the remaining light PA and heavy PA troopers continue to engage human defenders:
picture

End of battle- table and complex strewn with the dead, wounded and captured. In the background is the rebel leader (my friend Glenn) who ran the defenders:

What a clever way to handle a multi level facility! Kudos…I am off to steal it :P

Cloud…

If you want info on how and what I used to construct that platform send me an e-mail. I have some construction pics and can give a quick run down on parts, etc.

Wow, PLEASE run this at Havoc 24! I will definitely be there!

Blackhawk130 Sep 2007 7:43 a.m. PST

I'll bring it to Havoc 24. Well.. more to the point I will bring something similar since you have an idea of how forces and such are positioned! :D

However, me and two buddies have been hard at work on a massive mini's game (6' x 16' table) to compete for The Dave trophy. What we have coming we have been working on for about 5 months already- I'm sure it will be an eye-popper as well as a hit amongst the mini's crowd.

Ditto, that's very nice. Looks a little heavy, though…or is that plexi rather than glass on the "shelves" there?

Blackhawk130 Sep 2007 12:22 p.m. PST

1/4" Plexi.. no way would I use glass! :D

Cost about $80 USD at my local window shop- they custom cut it, drilled in the holes for the connectors, and beveled the edges.
