"Marlburian flags?" Topic

I usually make my own flags. Or more specifically, I use free online artwork and re-size, cut-and-paste, and otherwise put together most of my own flags. Sites like Warflag are one of the great online resources for this kind of thing.

But for the Marlburian period that is sometimes hard to do/find, esp. for some of the smaller states.

So please help me out (or refresh my failing memory?): who makes commercially-available printed flags for 25-28mm Marlburian era armies (say, 1685-1715)?? Any help would be appreciated.

Warflag.com has tons of them for free.

GMB plans to do some. You can already get some of the French for the WSS – they are noted as suitable for both in the SYW listings.

IIRC Baccus has a range of self adhesive flags

Pictors: yes, thanks. You may note that I paid homage to Warflag in my first paragraph. Like you, I have found the site to be a great help! But now I'm looking for more flags, beyond what they offer.

airraid: interesting about GMB. I hope they do branch into WSS soon. Their flags are terrific. Unfortunately, France is one coutry that I'm pretty well OK with for flags. If GMB starts doing some of the smaller states, that would be great!

vtsaogames: Thanks for the info about Cotton Jim's Flags. Looks like they have some of exactly what I'm looking for! Like huevans, I too am wondering how Cotton Jim's flags compare to GMB in quality. Any thoughts?

I used to have a site bookmarked that contained quite a few free Dutch cavalry and infantry flags that were very well done (along with some colour uniform info). But I can no longer find it.

Does that ring a bell with anyone else? Can you direct me (back) to the site? Thanks!

Reiver Castings have flags for the Williamite/Jacobite period which may be suitable for Marlborough. They are available from the Under the Bed Enterprises website.

GMB are one of the best as these are more works of art. It just takes him a long time to turn out new product (flags). I would also recommend 'The Flag Dude' at: tmterrain.com/flags.htm The price is in Pounds but he's here in the states. If he doesn't have a flag and you can give the image he will produce it for you. Great turn around time and all his customers love his product.

I took Robert Hall's plates and resized the banners using Photoshop. The result can be sent on the link below. I am very pleased with the results.

They probably are going to be my best bet, failing any other free sites. I was always unsure whether the images could be printed/saved from the CDs themselves (I recall there being an "issue" with that on Uniformology's CDs some time back? Since corrected, I think?). But judging by your efforts, I guess the answer is "Yes"!? :-)

With Photoshop you can take the flags off the PDF for re-sizing and printing.

If you get really stuck, find out who the regiment's colonel or proprietor was and research the family heraldic arms. The main tinctures can be used as field colours and the blazons, etc. as devices. I find this much easier for Scots regiments as the armorial rolls are readily available on the net. English regiments in my experience are a bit more problematic. With so little hard evidence available, I don't worry about degrees of accuracy as no one knows any better anyway.
