Hi

I've just built a desert-style game board, and starting to think about terrain for it. I mainly play 40k.

My basic idea is to have a higher-tech "terraforming" facility or station, together with an alien jungle area. So I'm looking for small buildings, jungle plants and related scenery. I have a vision of habitat domes, perhaps a sensor tower, and maybe a power generator.

Does anyone have any suggestions for reasonably priced scenery like that in the UK? Although this is 40k, I'm trying to stay clear of the whole Gothic approach

Check out Terragenesis. There are plenty of buildings that can be used as inspiration, and you can find out how to build them out of a few household objects.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Just noticed bad typing – should obviously read "facility"…

Frozen Icee or Coke clear plastic lids for domes. You can also go to your local mainstream DIY hardware store and buy plastic lamp/celing fan globes that would make good Green-dome enclosures. For your Terraformer I'd buy a few electrical boxes and glue them in a compound layout or a line. Add PVC right angle bends as large vents or blowers. Scavenge a few computer processor fans for the tops or sides of the electrical boxes. The metal heat-sinks might look good as well. Irrigate things with tube running through your greenery.

For plants…raid the hobby stores when they have sales or coupons on greenery and floral. Its an alien planet so you can get away with odd plants. The Fish Bedding plastic plant squares are handy. GW sells them for a mint but hobby stores and aquarium shops will have them for reasonable prices.

Matikishi's Tea house for his cork tile colony building plans is what you want.

Also check Armorcast for a condenser tower.

If you're real good, the bottom of a two-liter soda bottle will make an interesting instie-tent.

Look for a UK provider of IMEX terrain kits.

The chemical plant will give you all the tubes, pipes and dodads you need to build a factory system.

Here's one of those (not sure if it's the cheapest but I've bought from there so they are OK otherwise):

If you can find the powerplant thingee not sold at the address above as of yet, it'll give you generators and such. IMEX kits aren't quite the most realistic (nor high tech by any means), but they are good value and work well enough for Wh40k. And on that subject, the Syberclicks set will help you make the place look more gothic.

You could get some PVC drain pipes about 2 -3" diameter (quite cheap for a long length). Cut at around 40 degrees. Glue some mesh or granny grating to the cut part and you have a nice atmospheric vent. Add some technical gubbins and pipes to the lower half and you are done.

Plastic trunking or some square guttering parts can also be pressed into service.

As for jungle plants go raid your local aquarium shop!
Good Luck

If you don't mind cardstock, Worldworks has a Mars Station set that might work:

Better than aquariam stores are the huge box craft stores
"Michels" if there are any nearby
(they are cheaper and have a different varity).

Gorman, I made these Exo-Habitats mainly using building materials (metal vents and PVC/ABS parts). I was lucky and already had the clear domes. I've seen similar items in lighting departments at Home Depot (in the U.S.).

My alien "pod-trees" were made from dried mahogany pods found at Michaels Crafts (again, in the U.S.).

Here I'm using more plunbing parts to make up a terraform plant. I used Platformer and Chemical plant kits for the catwalks and piping.

Styrofoam packing shapes can give your structure the bulk you might want. I used both halves of the shipping protection from a computer ATX case. The lighting was sourced from those holiday villages (in stores like Michaels right now). I waited for the inevitable steep clearance discounts to grab mine from seasons past.

Mars Station ROCKS!!!! WorldWorks Games ouitdid themselves with that one. The interior "space furniture" is top notch. Bunks, a galley, tables, chairs, a Pub, AND tons of computer consoles!

And, those Mars terrain tiles, with the 3-d canyons, is just beautiful!!!
