Not that ommon, it was a labour intensive and expensive form of armour though it did enjoy a period of popularity in Italy and the areas which bought Italian exports. (I.e Spain, France, the Low Countries.

Are two threads with a number of pictures in them, two of which are clearly infantry armour.

But give their pricetag I'd say that they would be outside the price range for most doppelsöldner. Rather anima/anime style armoru would be worn by officers if at all.
