The nearest, readily-available substitute for the modelling / upholstery product that I can think of would be a type of 'natural fiber' furnace filter that is manufactured in Kentucky. The ones that I have seen have a bluish coating. Because they are made in Kentucky, my guess is that the 'natural fiber' could well be horsehair

Old-school (usually Hispanic here in SoCal) auto upholsterers! May be a challenge to find in Minnesota, though

Is the fiber actually coated with rubber? I've seen trees made out of the stuff at the Wargame Holiday Centre in the UK, and those trees are very tough and durable. Wouldn't upholstery fibre be sort of like,
string or hemp? |

No; actual horsehair, coated in rubber, was used in upholstery because of its springiness. It's been recommended as a hegde/foliage material since the early days of wargaming, but is getting harder and harder to find as it has fallen out of favor in that industry. Allen |

I cannot remember where from but I heard that it does not stand up to being exposed to the air ( & UV?) very well. Not a problem when it is stuffed inside a piece of upholstery of course

OK, so no one else has said it, I guess I'll have to. Have you tried a rubberised horse? I'm sure they are still around, my Old Man used to bet on them all the time! |

The horses started getting latex allergies. (Too many banana chips in their sweet feed) Now they're trying to genetically engineer boxwoods for the game table. |
