Greetings, gentlemen and ladies,

I've just started looking at paint schemes for some 1/48 scale aircraft that I picked up to use as air support for the infantry. I can see that painting German 'planes will be much more fun than the relatively boring British one!

It seems that the balkankreuz/Greek cross was adopted sometime very late in WWI (mid 1918 or so). Can any of you fine people shed some light on when and why the change was made from the Iron Cross marking?

Kind regards

Will

Go to the Squadron Shop for lozenge and cross decals in 1:48 also, if your kits have none.

Dom, thanks for the great link, that is a fantastic resource. I like the idea of US aircraft using a red star as an identifier!

And thanks, OFM, but the kits come with enough decals for 2 or three aircraft (and I'll have even more extras after I start painting black squares for the Ottoman planes).

Here is another nice source – scroll down about 1/3rd of the way:

I have seen photos during the transition period where a thin white wash was used to knock off the the corners of the eisenkreuz to shape the balkankreuz, and the overpainted black still showed through in areas. Nice addition to a model if done well.
