And thats the cheapest used copy; A new one is $250!

link

Is this some kind of conspiracy or what?

'A History of the Art of War in the Middle Ages' starts at $10 USD used. Hmmmm……I erm,…..well

I'm remnided of Anchorman where Ron Burgandy is trying be be Mr.Mack and he drops something like "My home smells of Mahogany and I have many leather bound books".

I might go with "I have some paper backs where the Front cover has cleanly come away from the binding, but they were expensive anyway and in otherwise fine condition".

Oh man, that should be – Oman's – Not 'Omans'.

It shouldn't be 'Omens' either, that would be way off.

'Owens' is right out.

I have a battered copy of Glickman's "Painted in Blood, a History of the Wyoming Valley", which Amazon alleges sells for a minimum of $120. USD I wish I had bought more of them when they came out.

But, Oman is rare, OOP, and still useful. Old farts still think it's the best ever.
The price is a bit steeper than the last time I looked, but so is everything else.

I suppose it wouldn't help to mention that my (new) Greenhill copy cost 30 pounds in 1997?

No?

Thought not…

Lentulus04 Jun 2007 9:35 a.m. PST

You know, I like my copy, but for $200 USD I would go back to using the library's copy.

coopman04 Jun 2007 9:52 a.m. PST

I'll sell you my copy for only $125.00 USD

The lesson here is that the price on many books are going no where but up. If you don't buy them when they are in print and available, you will pay the piper when they are out of print and hard to find.

Lentulus04 Jun 2007 10:46 a.m. PST

"out of print and hard to find"

Until the publisher says "on this hand we have the photo-ready art/the pdf files/whatever, on the other this book that will sell for $200".

Oman is an exception, of course, many books of substantial interests in small markets vanish rapidly without a trace.

Some a bit cheaper here;

Some a bit cheaper here

That's about the price I paid sometime ago--around $80.00.

UK Bookworld 2004 lists 5 ranging in price from £10.00 GBP to £45.00 GBP – the cheapest being the oldest! Latest update of current prices has a couple at £50.00 GBP

Wow, I remember seeing that book in local bookstores. Never got around to buying it.

Khazarmac04 Jun 2007 2:19 p.m. PST

I picked up a matching set of this one, and the medieval wars ones too. Got them for about £20.00 GBP or so a piece I think.

S'blood!

I had no idea the old tome had become so pricey. I'll have to pour me a spot of port and read it again.

(Leftee)04 Jun 2007 9:01 p.m. PST

Geez, about 60 or so bucks in the late eighties early nineties. Pretty much the most expensive book I've bought.

Father Georgi05 Jun 2007 7:20 a.m. PST

Ouch! I paid £38.00 GBP for my slightly batterd copy

RockyRusso05 Jun 2007 9:28 a.m. PST

Hi

I paid $42.50 USD in 1979, new. Spending power of that amount back then was approximately 120 figs. Well, that would be Hinchcliff prices!

The year before I bought the 1924 edition of the Middle ages 2 volume set for $95. USD

Actually, both buys consisted of my wife says "you cannot keep hoping the library has them, just buy them!".

Married an intellectual, I did!

Hmmm, well I feel better hearing that it has always been a bit expensive. I can seehow $42 USD in '79 would be some considerable ducats, maybe not so far off from the present price.

Artorius20 Jun 2007 11:44 p.m. PST

I, too, bought my copy for $42.50 USD in 1979. It's the A&M Reprint, but it's hardbound and still in great condition. The comment from the bookseller was, "Gee, you must really want that book." I was 18 at the time and $42.50 USD was a lot of money.

RockyRusso21 Jun 2007 9:10 a.m. PST

Hi

Ahh, yes, I really really wanted it. Grin.
