Is it possible to buy 'turned' balcony/porch railings and other more elaborate bits than can be easily realised in balsa? I wonder whether something suitable might be found in doll's house suppliers although these would be likely to be large for 28mm?

Also do any manufacturers make brick/stone chimneys? Would make a nice add-on for home made buildings…

With a visible hearth, useful for burned out sections of Stalingrad too…

Yes! A big doll house supply store in Delray Beach has all the materials in "Half scale" which is 1/48. Turned railings, brick and stone sheets, and "Clapboard" siding in the right sclae. Also tons of little stuff (lights, shelve items, etc. They have brick laid chimney stock that you just cut and fold into your shape of chimney, nice, with real grout. I go their, but don't have their web. Its right acroos the street from the library and the "Atlantic Avenue" walk. I'll post it next time I go down their, as y'all probably are not in S. Florida???

Ah- no, Leicestershire. But there are doll's house suppliers here and knowing I'm looking for 1/2 scale is a big help.

The Doll House Corner may be your spot, smokeyroan.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I think "half scale" refers to it being half the one inch equals one foot size. That puts it at 1/24 scale. There still may be some useful stuff.

Don't forget the model railroad suppliers – often the same place as the dolls house suppliers too. They are both kinda pricey.

Smokey Roan17 May 2007 5:18 a.m. PST

Right! They do have the "Quarter" 1/48 scale in all that as well. Thatas what I meant! Sorry.

Chris Wimbrow17 May 2007 5:24 a.m. PST

Ahh! Right you are. I didn't know about the quarter inch scale.

Ainsty/Old Crow have the chimney breasts you might require in their Old Imperial City line.

"chimney breasts"

Great term, though now I'm going to have that old Commodores tune running through my head for the rest of the day.

"Ow, she's a brick…house…"

Neotacha17 May 2007 8:40 p.m. PST

What part is the chimney breast, anyway? Is that the bit that sticks out of the house right behind the fireplace proper?

Sounds like an unpleasant female complaint!

If you have a Hobby Lobby or Michael's in your area, hit it before you start ordering online. You may just be surprised what you'll find there. These stores are very hit or miss when it comes to useable doll house supplies, but you can often find great items there, especially if you're willing to fudge a little on the scale.

Also, check out the yellow pages in the phone book of the nearest large town, or in a town that has a lot of antique stores and craft marts. You might just be surprised to find a doll house store closer than yuo ever suspected! Now, when you go into these specialty stores, be prepared for sticker shock. My wife visited a doll house store in Houston and they actually had a solid platinum doll's tea set for $1,200 USD in 1/48 scale!

They also had some decent siding and other building supplies that weren't too expensive. Check 'em out!
