link link picture I have these critters around the backyard. I've actually seen them drag ants underground. Now, imagine these guys were 10-15 feet long, or bigger? CC |

Funny -- that first pic looks like the things they put in Checkov's ear in Wrath of Khan. |

There's nasty burrowing bugs called Antlions in Half-Life 2. picture Though granted, they probably owe more to the Starship Troopers bugs than real Antlions. |

They are very cool. Used to play with them/feed them when I was a kid. Yes, just glad they don't grow bigger, and live at the beach

Giant one of these in 1 of the original star wars? |
cloudcaptain | 08 May 2007 3:53 p.m. PST |
Nah
that was the Sarlak. It was just a big stomach with a mouth. Seems like a grenade would do the trick on a giant one of these. |

Anyone make plastic toy antlions? |
Kayl MacLaren | 08 May 2007 6:39 p.m. PST |
Dunno about Enemy Mine, but there was a similar creature (giant antlion) in Star Frontiers. |

Goldwyrm, Don't tell me you've been smitten by this bug too? :) CC |

Lowtardog, antlions are European as well! |
Privateer4hire | 09 May 2007 12:05 a.m. PST |
The creature in enemy mine was like a reptile with a long probe tongue. The monster stayed sub-surface except for it's snake-like tongue with a gripping pad that it used to grab prey. It would then drag the prey below surface to eat. The reptile looking rest of the body came up when the human pilot was captured and subsequently rescued by the Drak(Drac?). |

Played with them as a kid. Flick a bit of sand into their funnel in the sand and they'll flick some back at you. They are not 100% effective as I remember seeing ants escape the trap. |
Cacique Caribe | 09 May 2007 5:00 a.m. PST |
Privateer4hire, Didn't that creature also make some sort of funnel-like pit? I seem to recall one of those weird looking turtle-like critters falling into one and trying to get out, only to be eaten and the shell spit out to fall with others already around the rim. Or am I thinking of another movie? CC |
Goldwyrm | 09 May 2007 7:09 a.m. PST |
Goldwyrm,Don't tell me you've been smitten by this bug too? :) CC- Yes, they remind me of the Thorny Tanker bug from SST. They were also a D&D monster. I think there is a 25mm miniature of one, but just the front of it coming out of a hole. Now that I'm playing 15mm Sci-fi as well as 28mm, I'll take them in whatever size I can find them. |

Wasn't there something like this in the scifi movie, 'Enemy Mine' that ate the 'space turtles' and tried to eat DENNIS QUAID too???? 8-/ There are bugs as big as a human hand
.(some beetles)
and in the Amazon
mantis's
have been seen at least a foot or so LARGE
. Who's to say these things couldn't get much larger
espeically on other planets??? (hence starship troopers???)
wouldn't be hard to find toy bugs or modify SST bugs to be something like that in a game???? But I still want a 'tentacle pit-beast' for my games! 8-) *slish

CC you are 100% correct about 'Enemy Mine'. The human (Willus Davatch or as Jerry called him: Darwitch) fell into its pit as he chased a little turtel thing and Jerry blasted the monster with his lightening gun. Later in the film the damn thing came up right into their tent, and Darwitch tossed some hot coals into its mouth. Good film
I love it.
