I just got back a set of masters from the caster. I'll pick out the best ones, make sure they are perfect, and then send them back for production. The leftovers, well, a few lucky people will get samples.

So in a few more weeks, our website will have a shopping cart up, and we'll be able to take orders!

I'll get some even better pics up tomorrow.

Crusoe the Painter03 May 2007 10:09 p.m. PST

I hit submit too soon!

I want to thank EVERYONE on this board who has helped me and sim out, with finding resources, and the great words of encouragement!

Thanks everyone, for all your help!

And thank you Bill, for running such a great website!

Neat…these would be good alongside of other makes and models of Greys…maybe a caste system etc…

Crusoe the Painter03 May 2007 11:08 p.m. PST

Well, these aliens do have a caste system, and there are a few others planned… :)

RubberRonnie04 May 2007 1:38 a.m. PST

Nice. Why no boots, or alien equivalent?

TheMasterworkGuild04 May 2007 2:55 a.m. PST

Crusoe – Its not clear from your pics but can you do multipart minis? How good is the design software? Could you do an 'floating' angel raised from the ground with flowing robes as the support? Rackham style intricate raised armour detail? A separate pair of feathered wings?

How do 'real' sculptors view these developments?

This just looks soo good. The future is here.

Doc Perverticus04 May 2007 2:57 a.m. PST

Maybe no boots as it lets them feel the vibrations in the ground. Maybe they have developed this inate ability into a sense that us poor inept humans have no analogy for.

Or maybe they just like the feel of grass betwixt their piggies.

…more ALIENS…..*drool*…..slish…slish….

Sgt DWW-bartentacle 'quivering' in anticipation…(glad I signed up on mailing list way back when!!!)

Cacique Caribe04 May 2007 5:54 a.m. PST

Thanks for the update. Very, very nice!!!

I've just updated this past thread (on SF Discussion) with this new information:

Those look pretty good even as bare metal. Any idea about ETA for production or price?

Crusoe the Painter04 May 2007 7:47 a.m. PST

No boots: We have bolognian for that. Except for low-g/low-pressure environments like space, the Thrade are genetically engineered clones. So why have boots, when you can engineer their feet to be tougher… :)

Detail wise, there are TEENY little nostrils on the thrade foreheads, these came out in the prints, though just barely. So we know the lower limit.

Tools wise:

Zbrush 3 is going to change a lot of things. It will make my life easier ( Being able to create, detail, and pose models, in one app ). May 15th is when it comes out.

So floating angels, wrinkled monsters, detailed armor, will not be a problem. Simple graphics can be created and used to stamp detail almost anywhere.

I'm really excited and chomping at the bit to do all sorts of things using these techniques.

I like those. I'll take a set.

Crusoe the Painter04 May 2007 9:00 p.m. PST

Eta? Within a couple of weeks.

Price? Still thinking about that, but I'm keeping packaging simple, and passing the savings on to you! ;)

BBurger04 May 2007 11:55 p.m. PST

I might have to get a dozen of those, to add variety to various sci-fi-skirmish wretched hives of scum and villany.

I like the hands – very non-human!

The pistol is a bit Buck Rogers, but that's easy enough to change with a file…

I assume these are 28mm?

Crusoe the Painter05 May 2007 12:28 a.m. PST

Yep, they're a tad taller than that, 34mm to the top of the head.

Minimaker05 May 2007 4:18 a.m. PST

Looks excellent. Good to see the products after the whole process. The surface looks a little uneven but not in such a way it will give problems painting. On the skin it adds nicely to the effects. Is that a direct result of the surface quality of the masters? Or is that from after casting.

Good to see that you've "accentuated" the details like belts and pockets. That will make itmuch easier for painting, etc. Have you already gotten one painted up?

Minimaker05 May 2007 4:20 a.m. PST

Ah, you mentioned having left over casting which will not be used for production. Perhaps you should paint one up to see how it goes.

I take it you'll make an announcement here when they're available? Very nicely done. I'm in for sure.

Crusoe the Painter05 May 2007 12:53 p.m. PST

Yes, there will be an announcement.

Yes, I do plan on painting a set… :)

I just got them thursday.

Avalokitesvara06 May 2007 7:53 a.m. PST

On the question of how "real" sculptors view it.
Opinions vary I guess. Personally I think sculpting is a matter of using tools and a material for doing three dimensional images.
What tools and what materials people use differs. Using one type of material and one type of tool does not in any way make it more "real" sculpting than using another tool and another material.

The only "artsculptor" I personally know – that is a sculptor who has gone to artschool, has exhibits and receives governmental funds for his jobs – in fact only sculpts using cad software and 3-d printers. So at least in artschools noone considers this any less "real" than using more "traditional" materials.

Avalokitesvara06 May 2007 7:55 a.m. PST

For LEARNING how to sculpt it is useful to get familiar with more traditional materials as well though just as it is useful to know classical painting techniques even if you wish to do abstract art.

Insomniac06 May 2007 2:38 p.m. PST

If the minis turn out as good as these ones…who gives a damn how they got there (there is a place for all manner of sculpting/creating in this hobby).

There is an art behind the digital sculpting, just the same as hand sculpting…it's just different.

You never know, some of the games developers may get in on the act and start making minis from some of the cool computer games out there…having never even SEEN a sculpting tool…more minis for the masses…that HAS to be good as long as the quality is there.

BBurger06 May 2007 6:47 p.m. PST

34mm? That's getting pretty big – especially as the rest of my SF forces are true-25mm from GZG.

Still, they're aliens, who says they can't all be seven feet tall? They'll just be hitting their heads on a lot of doorframes in human-designed spaces…

Crusoe the Painter17 Jun 2007 3:29 p.m. PST

Well, it's finally here. The news item hasn't been posted on the frontpage yet, but here's the link!

Are you going to Gencon this year by any chance?

Bye, Ming-Hua

Crusoe the Painter17 Jun 2007 4:49 p.m. PST

If some miracle happens, possibly? :)

Minimaker18 Jun 2007 9:18 a.m. PST

Hmm. Are your figures going toGencon by any chance? :)

Bye, Ming-Hua

Crusoe the Painter20 Jun 2007 11:57 a.m. PST

That's a good question. We're open to people helping to put them there!

Minimaker20 Jun 2007 3:46 p.m. PST

Well, the list of exhibitors is over here:

Perhaps you could check if any of them is interested in selling your figures.

Bye, Ming-Hua
