After reading the thread "what ancients rules are out there?" I got curious to know how many of these are using the DBx basing system. This question is not just asked to satisfy a need for useless facts but it actually do serve a purpose. I'm currently building a few DBA armies that might get expanded into larger armies and I would like to know what rules sets there are that can be recommended with the DBx basing convention.

Armati uses very similar basing, and is an excellent system. I prefer DBA because it provides battles that are more flexible and (I think) fun, but Armati has a lot going for it.

Warrior and DBM both evolved from WRG 7th basing, and are virtually indistinguishable in their basing.

I mainly play Strategos, but all my stuff is based for DBx.

If you haven't based them already, look at the various magnetic basing solutions. All of my 15mm or smaller are based on metal (washers or steel disks) and placed onto magnetic sheeting cut to base size. I can swap my HoTT pirate army into individually based skirmish models.

Games which use Dbx basing (or can easily be used with it):
DBA, DBM, DBMM (obviously)
Warrior/7th
Armati
Conquerors and Kings
Strategos
Warmaster Ancients
Ancient Warfare
Hoplon
Vis Bellica
Warhammer Ancients (you'll need some means of marking casualties, but that's all)

Hey, I was hoping to be first to recommend Hoplon.

You can add Might of Arms to that list too.

Might of Arms, Classical Hack, and Ancient Warfare all can use WRG basing.

"Art of war" (working title :}) from Slitherien Software and Osprey use DBx basing and could be available later this year. They are looking quite good and have encourage me to get back into ancients.

Have a look here

Given that there is already a wargames rule set called Art of War and a WAb supplement, I think that Slitheen are being somehat brazen in using a name of another ruleset.

add to list Basic Impetus (free to download at dadiepiombo.com/basic2.html)

it uses multile DBx bases (similar to Armati)

If you are going with a Helenic army DBMM does not have the same base sizes for the Kn(f) (companions/agemma/etc) as the rest of DBx (40x40 instead of 40x30), though with a bit of magnetc tomfoolary i am sure you could make a extra size base 'shoe' system work.

FML Hohenzollern18 Apr 2007 10:14 a.m. PST

Big Battle's DBA, DBM, Armati.

El Jocko18 Apr 2007 10:35 a.m. PST

Unfortunately, it can be more complex than simply having the right size base. In order to successfully morph an army from DBA to another rule set you also need to consider the affect of the army lists. For example, just because both rule sets mount spearmen on 40x15 bases, doesn't mean that both rule sets include spearmen in the army your looking at.

So the list of rules tells you where to start, but you've got to look at individual army lists to see how hard the morph is going to be.

Very good point Le Jacko, look at the DBx and Armati Sassanid lists for a start!!!

WRG baseing is the one true standard in wargaming. It would be simpler to list the ones that don't.

Note: Warhammer Ancients is really a skirmish level game and does better with individual 25mm figures. While it clearly is a popular game, multi figure baseing is a misfit. You can put lipstick on the pig, but it still is a pig. No reason to change what it is, some of us like ham.
