Here are some pics of my recently finished Spanish tercio based on the Warfare in the Age of Discovery rules. It has 64 arquebus and 64 pike for a total of 128 figs! The arquebus are 15mm Essex and the Spanish pike and command are old Glory, mixing the command, armored, and unarmored bags. The flags are taken from actual flags, but details on which flags were in each of the three actual tercios from the mid 16th century is sketchy at best, so I had to guess. Now I just need to paint a helluva lot of Swiss to counter this thing!

Cool! I did some tercios and P&S regiments for TYW in 10 mm, but that project has been on hold for a while. Now you are tempting me to get back to it.

Wow – now THAT is a unit!

Nice. That is what people should be doing with 15's and the other smaller scales. Making larger armies. Having the same number of figs in a smaller scale as you would for a 28mm unit is a little lame, build the units bigger or many more of them at least. Get more figs on the table.

This is fantastic and you should be well commended for a job superbly done.

Excellent job!! I based mine in a similar way a while back, I have always really like the look of the massed formations on one mobile base.

Great Stuff. Inspiring.

SWEET!!! Gustavus would be unhappy though…

Very impressive, I'm tempted to hunt out my 28mm Spanish (unpainted, bar a few figures, alas).

Looking great. Wish I had the patience to paint such units (at larger scale than 6mm, that is)

With so many sharp pikes you'll have to conduct a 'Risk Assesement' on your gaming, else the Health and Saftey police might make you put corks on the ends…..

And 'Pictors' … I quite agree. Thousands of figures per side…yes!!

Exactly why I have 200+ 15mm Gendarmes and many hundreds of pikemen.

Nice photos. Gives me some impetus to keep plugging along with my Renaissance 15's. The Old Glory 15's look nice painted up.

Hi

My tercios consist of 30 pike, 30 shot and if early enough a dozen sword……..in 28.

I have 5 of them!

When I started doing the period, just because my buddies were gaiming it, I did spanish because NO ONE else had any. They all had lots of swiss and landschknichts…..even FRENCH. But no spanish.

My first 75 in 25mm were out of a now discontinued "conquistador" line. Raggedy figs with beards and torn clothing. Lots of fun, saw them as "veterans" on campaign!

Got addicted. In our rules, I haven't ever been in a position with all these guys to field more than 2 tercio with cav at once.

Rocky, those raggedy old conquistador figures ring a bell. Can you remember the manufacturer?

RockyRusso11 Apr 2007 8:59 a.m. PST

Hi

I always see this thread too early in the morning coffee sequence! The WAY I got them was odd. I saw samples at an Origins where the distributer didn't have them in stock. SO, I made a massive pre paid order that didn't arrive for over a year. They were from England and by the time I got the order, the company had gone out of business.

But they are legends locally. Local renaiassance gamers are so convinced that they roll magic dice that we have had fights where they stand in square, and the enemy refused to close and only attacks the OTHERS. So, my sleeves sorte, shoot and retreat to the pikes LAUGHING at the cowards!

Grin.

But I just cannot recall the name. It was some 20 years ago.

Now that's an impressive looking unit. If I was richer or crazier I'd think about it with my Eureka Portuguese.

That's a great looking unit.
I remember seeing a really well done Tercio on one of the pages of Vae Victis magazine a few years ago. I think the figs were all Minifigs 15s. Apart from Essex and Old Glory, does anyone else know of manufacturers that make good 15s for the late sixteeth and early seventeenth centuries? I have a half painted Spanish Tercio and I'm looking for some suitable English/Dutch/French opponents?
Thanks for any help.

In 15s

Smallish figures but there's Stronghold Miniatures (I think it's the range I first knew as Jacobite Minatures) link

Black Hat have the Gladiator range blackhat.co.uk

There could be something useful between the Vexillia and Mirliton ranges vexillia.ltd.uk

And don't by-pass Minifigs link

And, there's East Riding Miniatures Late 16th Century line:

Just saw this thread on a google search… 128 figure tercio!!! Nice!! I've just finished a 52 figure later Spanish tercio and thought that looked impressive, but this still looks great almost a decade on.
