Quite aside from the Brit (usually Monty) bashing (which to be honest could be a lot worse for us) a lot of the Ambrose stuff in BoB has to be taken with a pinch of salt because they are oral histories which must always be treated with caution (example: "Tiger" fever whearby dozens and dozens of Allied units in Normandy reported sighting Tigers, usually they were nothing of the kind). Most of it seems pretty kosher but every time Britain (aside from Airborne) and politics come up Ambrose has a tendancy to stray from the path. I'd advise the same for pretty much all oral histories, particuarly by those who are rather politicised. On the Monty front- who planned D-Day? Yup, Monty. Of course Monty wasn't the uber-General wartime propaganda made him out to be but then neither was Patton or Rommel. Monty was superb at the set piece battle and almost always won, his 1945 campaigns (almost always ignored) were models of intelligent and indeed agressive command. I dare you to find me a general who didn't have some kind of fault. Even Bill Slim had his in Africa. |
