Hey all. Im looking for 25/28mm aliens like in the alien films. I can only find two companies.
Leading edge miniatures only found on ebay – cost alot but they do look nice.
East riding miniatures do the whole alien range easily found and fairly cheap. But i wanted to know are these figures any good. I can only see them in one pose in a single picture on the ERM site and they dont look as good as leading edge. Can anyone tell me if theyre worth buying?

shelldrake03 Apr 2007 3:51 p.m. PST

I have the Leading Edge figures – they are good figures and require a glueing one part onto their backs – the Queen is great too.

I can take some photos and put them on a site for you to look at if you like.

I cant comment on the other brand as i have never seen them.

How 'detailed' do you want your aliens??? There's the 'aliens figure' set from WIZKIDS for their Aliens vs Pred line…(which is sorta 'pricey')…or the others mentioned above??

Reveirsco also has a nice 'set' of 'alienesque' critters at his site…Excalibur has two 'alienesque' varients…(alt heads)…

Does any of that help???

The Leading Edge line is eBay only because it's been OOP for years…

CaptainPleb33303 Apr 2007 4:16 p.m. PST

Thanks for the help so far i will look up the other miniatures you have mentioned. Leading edge figures are nice but i may go for the most cost effective.

aka Mikefoster03 Apr 2007 4:30 p.m. PST

I do like the Horrorclick ones. When there are more of them out I will probably start buying them up for Aliens type games. With the Aliens games I have in mind quantity is more important than quality so the Wizkids ones should work well for me.

CPT Jake03 Apr 2007 5:32 p.m. PST

I know they are not exctly "Aliens" aliens, but the GW Tyranid warriors or the gaunt thingies without guns can be made up and painted up like "Aliens". That's how I did mine and I think they look the part.

CmdrKiley03 Apr 2007 5:57 p.m. PST

Don't forget about the Kryomeks or Koralon!

CaptainPleb33304 Apr 2007 4:26 a.m. PST

Ive had a look at the other manufacturers (GW, void etc) and i dont think they will suit what i planned. I was hoping someone who had bought the ERM aliens would be able to tell me if theyre any good. In the meantime i wil keep looking on ebay for leading edge.

CaptainPleb333,

I have the Leading Edge ones. What human figures where you planning on using?

I might be able to take a comparison photo or two for you this coming weekend.

Human figures ive not got any but there is no real trouble because lots of copanies make sci fi types. At my wargames club the most common are void and 40k. Are there any ones you would recomend?

Cacique Caribe04 Apr 2007 6:00 a.m. PST

For more versatility in figure selection, I really like the EM-4 troopers originally done by Mark Copplestone:

They go perfect with some of these Copplestone and Shadowforge figures (for armed civilians):

I also have a few Hasslefree that fit great too.

I have played with Leading Edge minis in the past. They are nice, but they are true 25mm. They have the most complete line of characters from the movie that I have seen. LE made every Marine character, Ripley, Newt, Burke, Bishop, and the Queen. The only problem is the fact that they are no longer made.

Cacique Caribe04 Apr 2007 6:32 a.m. PST

"The only problem is the fact that they are no longer made."

Ebay sellers are making a killing, or trying to at least, as can be seen when you pull up "Leading Edge" on a search.

Yeah thats why i posted this here in search of alternatives.
I seen the one queen going for about 20 quid and 5 pound postage.

Hastati04 Apr 2007 9:05 a.m. PST

The Mid-Tech troopers (modeled on Colonial Marines) made by Denizen go perfectly well with LEG Aliens in terms of size.

malamute04 Apr 2007 9:18 a.m. PST

The ERM figures are quite crude, they are also more like 25mm. The Leading Edge ones are better, but as mentioned difficult to get hold of.

CaptainPleb33304 Apr 2007 9:28 a.m. PST

OK after finally finding someone who ows the ERM figures – are they worth the money and does the paintjob make a difference. AS ive said its hard to judge them there is only one photo of one paint job.

Farstar04 Apr 2007 10:11 a.m. PST

"I seen the one queen going for about 20 quid and 5 pound postage."

If memory serves, that model is NOT small.

wordwildwebb04 Apr 2007 11:53 a.m. PST

The WizKids HorrorClix ones should be in retail stores in May…

CmdrKiley04 Apr 2007 2:02 p.m. PST

I got a Konami Queen Alien off of eBay for about $10. USD She's smaller than the Horrorclix one, but looks good with 28mm figures. In fact I think she fits in quite well with the size comparison against Ripley in Aliens than the Queen seen in Aliens vs. Predator.

The Konami Alien Warriors are probably too big for 28mm and probaly work closer to 28mm.

I have some of the LEG Aliens and I'm not all that impressed with the sculpts. I find the Kryomek warriors more impressive and just as 'giegeresque'. They fit in well with my brood.

I also have some of the Copplestone Castings Alien Hunters to use as Predators.

For Colonial Marines, you might want to consider Kroymek Nexus Marines and/or Psyclos.

Also the old Void 1.1 Viridian Marines were pretty good for Colonial Marines.

WeeSparky04 Apr 2007 6:18 p.m. PST

Since you don't have humans for gaming with them yet, have you considered 15mm?

QRF has a good set in their sci-fi minis.

CaptainPleb33305 Apr 2007 6:43 a.m. PST

No i wanted to do it in 28mm for a more detailed but still quite small skirmish.

wordwildwebb05 Apr 2007 6:48 a.m. PST

Also for Colonial marines you can take a look at Starship Troopers light armored troopers from Mongoose. With the right paint job they are almost dead-on. You'll have to scratch-build a smartgun and armature for Vasquez/Dietrich, but that's not that hard with a bit of sprue. The guns are a little long, but you can clip them down if you like.

Here is the entire "crew" of Aliens:

I really wish someone had nice photos of how they game that film:

Shame you don't want 15mm…

link

print out hadleys hope at A3 and you can do a paper model… all for free

Cacique Caribe08 Apr 2007 9:33 a.m. PST

Ursa,

Nice!

link

Can those plans be purchased and later be zoomed and printed to fit 28mm, or are there legal restrictions to doing that.

If it is a go, I would use the plant to cut out foamboard sections instead of paper.

Ursa Major Miniatures09 Apr 2007 5:25 a.m. PST

The plans are free to download
they are scaled at 1/144…. on A4 paper

enlarging to 1/100 fits on A3,

A2 will be 1/70

A1 will be 1/48

but the quality will be reduced.
