I was doing a google of images for the British Musuem for a long term wargame project and came across this book:
-

The Marine Consul – 1995

It is by some (Swede?) guy named Jukka M. Heikkilä. I have never heard of him or this work. Is it available in English? Is it any good? Worth the read?

That name is pure Finnish, some of the pix are taken in Kuru, which is in Finland

I guess he is, in fact, a Finn

I drew the picture and I wrote the book. And yes, I am a Finn. My debut novel Merikonsuli is a historical novel about ancient naval warfare. My fifth novel is about naumachia (a gladiatorial combat in a pool). None of my books are available in English, which is a great loss for the English readers ;)

I am a Finnish author. I write historical fiction set in the ancient world. My works are currently available only in Finnish (but of course the foreign rights are for sale).

My published works are:
* Antigonos, jumalten poika – 302-294 BC
* Arkhimedes syrakusalainen – 270 BC
* Merikonsuli – 245-241 BC
* Tyranni – 215-212 BC
* Augustuksen kisat – 2 BC

1995: Merikonsuli tells about the Roman Republic and naval warfare. The main character of the book is Gaius Lutatius Catulus, a Roman novus homo. Important characters include Hiero II of Syracuse, Archimedes and Hannibal.

1997: Tyranni tells about the power struggle in Syracuse and siege warfare. The main character of the book is Epicydes, a tyrant. Important characters include Hannibal and Archimedes.

2000: Antigonos, jumalten poika tells about the Wars of the Diadochi and ethical philosophy. The main character of the book is young Antigonus Gonatas, who later became the king of Macedon. Important characters include Antigonus Monophthalmus, Demetrius the Besieger, Pyrrhus of Epirus, Ptolemy I Soter, Zeno of Citium, Epicurus and Euclid.

2003: Arkhimedes syrakusalainen tells about mathematics and Egypt in Hellenistic times. The main character of the books is young Archimedes, a Syracusan mathematician. Important characters include Hiero II of Syracuse, Euclid and Ptolemy II Philadelphus.

2006: Augustuksen kisat tells about the gladiators and early Roman Empire. The key event is the naumachia of 2 BC. The main character is fictitious, but the important characters include Augustus, Livia and Julia.

2009?: [I haven't retired yet… and yes, the work in progress deals with galleys again.]

A few years have passed, but please let me give an update on the subject.

The news is that now The Marine Consul is available in English. It is available as a Kindle ebook and a paperback. The Kindle ebook is included in the Kindle Unlimited service.
