Just wondering how this Gladiator game plays.

might help. I really enjoyed the game… and the figures are perfectly acceptable just as they come.

Yes, I'd second that. A good value for money package that you can play out of the box. The only thing missing is a retiarius… but I understand that a second box may be along sometime from em-4 :o)

arabianknight01 Mar 2007 10:06 a.m. PST

According to the Ludus yahoo group the second box will contain.

Retiarius; Bestiarius; Amazon; Condemned Criminal; Lion.

I was thinking about this game the other day, too. Two questions, though:

1. Can the game be played as-is with figures that are not on hex bases, e.g. on round ones?

2. How easy would it be to strip the paint off of the EM-4 figures?

Cheers,

The first run of Ludus is now sold out but is still available from retailers and distributors – more are being produced now.

LG2 is at the printers.

Facing is not an issue so round bases would be fine.
Strip off the paint? Splutter, choke, wheeze…..I am distraught even at the suggestion of such an act……!

@Doug EM4: Thanks! LOL! If they were also available unpainted, they would not need stripping …

Can you play it solo? I've been messing with "solo-izing" a number of other gladiator rule sets ever since AH came out with their boardgame in the early '80's, but no joy.

I was just reading a book about gladiators to my son the other night; he might really enjoy this. Can someone provide more details?

Thanks,

@mjkerner: Maybe you could import some of the reaction tables from Two Hour Wargames' Chain Reaction 2.0 or something similar.

Skeptic01 Mar 2007 11:27 a.m. PST

@javelin98: There seem to be quite a few details in Wulfric's links …

Doug,

Just think you guys were leading the way with pre-painted miniatures and now everyone is copying you. :-)

My sons and I enjoy the heck out of this game, and when my youngest brother visits he plays too. Great game for the price. I cannot wait for the expansion.

@mjkerner: Two Hour Wargames have their "Red Sand, Blue Sky" ruleset for Gladiators. I play them solo and they work well.

There's a nice write up of a solo campaign using the rules on boardgamegeek.
