I've seen mention on various places regarding Sintra. I have a large building project I'm working on (single-story building 25" x 88") and am considering using Sintra. Is it worth the expense to buy it over traditional paper-backed foam core?

Eaxample, one website I found lists the following:
1/8" foam core 8" x 10", 10 sheets $3.50 USD
3mm Sintra 8" x 10", 10 sheets $14.40 USD

Is it worth the 4-fold price?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Well it's very nice to work with. Glues together with superglue. Strong. Light. Don't have to get fancy to hide the edges like you do with foamcore.

Check out David Kujit's article on the pyramid he built out of Sintra.

The pyramid article is where I had first heard of it, actually. Not having to cover up exposed edges sounds nice. The size of my model should show how much I'd have to cover up, not to mention door ways.

I think I'll make a small order to do some preliminary work.

I cover the edges of foamcore by making a half-lap joint at the corner. I cut all the way to the paper instead of half way though and peel all the foam off the paper.

An example of 9 joints.

I also, when making a building, put corner stones up the joint to cover the small gap you get.

An interesting article about working with Sintra:

Note the author claims thin CA is the best adhesive, giving butt joint strength up to a 25 pound load.

ya a half-lap joint or a 45 degree bevel cut hides any edges in foam-core anyway. You can usually get rigid pvc foam for cheaper than sintra and its essentially the same thing, cuts the same, strength and weight etc.

Where can you buy Sintra?

I found a local sign shop that keeps white in stock. My project calls for grey, so I'm having him order in a sheet for me. 3mm x 4' x 8' will cost me $49.50.

Check your local sign shops or check out:

It's where I got the prices I quoted above. Shipping is kind of cashy, they do UPS.

Try calling an industrial plastics supplier like Laird. Your building dimensions sound like buying larger sheets might be justified, and pricing per square foot will be much less than from hobby and art suppliers.
