This Eureka release seems like a possible 28mm candidate for the kind of troops that will be trying to restore law and order after a survivable cataclysmic event in the early 21st century (whatever the event):

So are the Copplestone Castings, EM-4, TAG, Black Scorpion and other figures I have seen in person or have seen announced in recent weeks.

Are there other candidates you care to suggest for 28mm gaming?

Some, of course, after a few years will no longer looks as "spiffy" and will probably be an amalgamation of military troops and equipment present in those areas!

Scenes of combined "troops" from "Reign of Fire" come to mind:

I would suggest Devil Dog Designs to complement your list.

Cheers,

Hey, how could I have forgotten Devil Dog! Thanks for the reminder.

D&P Minis also have some lovely modern Italians. Nice thing is they have alternate heads so you can have Alpini, Bersaglieri, regulars, specials etc.

Drferling21 Feb 2007 8:38 a.m. PST

How do the Copplestone future wars figures mix with the TAG stuff?

I would love to do a near future Russian re-invasion of Afghanistan using the Future Wars Russians (as Russians), FW Troopers (as Americans), and the Tag Afghans (as you guessed it Afghans). I figure a smattering of old Crow Vehicles (Tanks, 1/2 Tracks, and Technicals respectively) and a modified Disposable Heroes rule set and I'm good to go.

The new Mongoose Battlefield Evo pre-paints are quite nice, and pre-painted and non-collectable. Which is nice.

DrFerling,

The Copplestone Castings figures are a bit taller than what Copplestone did earlier (currently distributed by EM-4). And, to me, both are compatible in size, style and bulk.

The TAG figures seem to fall in the middle when it comes to size and bulk.

I would go for TAG if looking for Modenrs to fit but my personal favourite is Mongrel, I know sooner or later my 1980s Brits and Ruskis will be press ganged into action post apocalpse and if you mix in some of the MOFO (now gripping beast) Falklands stuff and their Argies also some of the Middle east militia form Mongrel you have a good irregular force, not to mention their Yanks and Germans….plenty of vehicles too from SJ and Chieftain too

Drferling21 Feb 2007 10:15 a.m. PST

How do MoFo and mongrel mix with TAG (and more importantly) Copplestone?

Lowtardog21 Feb 2007 10:45 a.m. PST

They are smaller, and dont mix too well with TAG IMHO as they are 1/56 they would fit OK with EM4 grenadier figures but would again be a bit small against the new Copplestone figures in their future wars range.

raven0121 Feb 2007 11:33 a.m. PST

Some of TAG,s SAS are good for post apocalpse as are the Dertiest Africa fig,s.

Area2321 Feb 2007 1:32 p.m. PST

I'm eyeing the D&P (Dadi & Piombo) modern Italians.
Italian Zombie Hunters. Squad Romero. Lt. Argento… :)

These new Eureka germans are marvellous.

I've got the TAG SWATs high on the want-list for law enforcement types.
Apparently their British troops could double for Dutch too.

Watch out for the Eureka Germans. If they follow with their Modern/Vietnam line they will be way to small to fit with TAG figures. I saw their Vietnam range side by side with Old Glory/West Wind's Vietnam and they did not match up at all. Think Eureka = Ral Partha true 25mm to OG/WW 28mm.

Mandroid21 Feb 2007 5:43 p.m. PST

TAG and Copplestone look like they would be a good fit. I also like PIG IRON infantry. Other ranges worth looking at would be Vor (Iron Wind Metals or ebay), or Shock Force (if you can find them on ebay). What about Urban Mammoth Viridians?

Nic Robson21 Feb 2007 6:16 p.m. PST

A note for Vcarter, the Germans and other models in the MOD range are sculpted by Kosta Heristanidis and are 28mm.
Our Vietnam and Kriegspiel (KSH)ranges are sculpted by Mike Broadbent and are smaller than the MOD range.

I haven't seen any Ral Partha moderns, so cannot comment. But the Vietnam range is certainlt taller and bulkier than the Ral Partha Italian Wars figures I have.

Nic EUREKA MINIATURES

Grey Ronin22 Feb 2007 1:07 a.m. PST

FWIW, I have both Eureka's new Germans and TAG; the TAG SAS and Germans are an excellent match. I've got minis sitting here at my desk at the moment and they look good together.

The German's in protective masks are so crying out for Post-Apoc scenarios!!!! Also, the Kevlar helmet, assault vest style webbing and G36's are perfect for near future generics!

To Nic and Gray, My bad. I'm glad you were able to correct my error. That is one of thing I like about this site.

Thanks,

Vince.

Area2322 Feb 2007 1:09 p.m. PST

Mandroid, I second your choices.
The Ral Partha VOR union Power armour troops are among the nicest I've seen.
The infantry are supposed to be on the large side though.
But maybe many of todays' figures have crept up to that scale ten years later.

Shock Force figs are available from the shockforce warehouse ebaystore.

Multiple scale war gamer23 Feb 2007 3:34 p.m. PST

How much Post Apoccalypic are we talking? A generation post there may be undernourished nations (relatively) [using lower tech?] with smaller body builds then their lower population but better nutrition [higher tech?] opponents?

Gracias,

Glenn

Great, I mis-spelled Apocalyptic…

Cacique Caribe23 Feb 2007 4:11 p.m. PST

If it happened at the end of the century, this is what I would expect:

I would love 28mm figures of that!!!

So the Copplestone Troopers for USA(or other nations)? I take it, what if though that the number of wars (conflicts etc)they face sees economies crumble including their own then you might see equipment, weapons and unifomrs coming out of mothballed storage.

Think of the Waffen SS and the Hitler Jugend alongside the Volkstuurm in WW2 or The call up of reserves or territorial units/conscripts. You might see veterans with the better more modern kit whilst lower quality uits wearing older gear
so it doesnt have to be that SciFi

Cacique Caribe11 May 2007 8:30 a.m. PST

Good point!

Can you still get miniatures from Devil Dog Designs?

Frontovik21 Sep 2009 5:16 a.m. PST

@Drferling – Weeeeellll the Russians never left the 'stan. The 40th Army did it's true but they were just the high profile bit.

Also in 2001 the Northern Alliance were suddenly able to afford a veritable avalanche of hardware from their Russian suppliers that required some 'assistance'…allegedly.

I've even heard some reports of a bit of 'score-settling' going on during that period – all just rumours though so take it with a pinch of salt.

DAWGIE21 Sep 2009 5:07 p.m. PST

i do love my 28mm COLD WAR MONGREL MINIS ( i have BRITS, WARSAW PACT, ISRAELIS), 28mm MOFO BRITS, BROOKS MINIATURES 28mm modern TOMMIES and D&P ITALIAN 28mm; all of these lines see lots of action in sci fi gaming scenarios.

deffo going to have tp pickup 28mm modern BUNDESWEHR drom EUREKA as well as some 28mm FRENCH from D&P.

my YANKS at present are all TAG, and i am happy with them, too.

i think that y'all could use modern YANKS for CANUCKS, too.

my generic MIDDLE EASTERN militia fighters and AFGHANS all come from MONGREL MINIS or TAG.

i also particularly like the UNION troopers from VOR for 21st/22nd century soldiers; they are big, nicely detailed, posed, and beautiful; i do not mind their large size at all.

what remains of my post apocalyptic armed civvies, raiders, nomads, and nutzoid milita types come from a number of makers, mostly in 25mm/ 28mm, and even a few in 32mm. at present i am slowly (as finances allow) re-recruiting replacements for leads that i sold off when i moved house the last time.
