Diaries may be, for all their inherently limited scope, may be the most honest of all war memoirs, and should be protected like the gold of Fort Knox.

This is a reminder along with Masters of the Air, of the horrific casualties suffered by the bomber crews. My father-in-law, a B-24 ball turret gunner, wrote about his experiences. Also limited in scope to his missions and crew, rumors and scuttlebutt about the larger plans.

My father was a top turret gunner and flight engineer on an 8th Air Force B-17. He didn't get overseas until very late, flying his 1st mission in late November 1944 and his 25th mission at war's end dropping food into the Netherlands. I have his flight diary and have converted it into a series of posts on my blog. See:

I do have more documentation and will be publishing it when I can get to it.
