Here is my most ambitious Ancient army to date: The Persians. I wanted to have a versatile force that could easily represent an early Greco-Persian force as well as a later force that fought against Alexander. The bulk of the models are from Victrix but there are some conversions as well from other sources. All were primarily painted with Contrast style paints.

First up a view of the early Persians with their Sparabara troops (Immortals shown with yellow headgear).

First conversions were making Horse Archers by simple torso swaps.

Side view showing the Sparabara troops. I deliberately based the shieldbearers on smaller bases that can be attached to Archer units as required. the Command chariot is from Warlord, the horses are from Footsore and the crew is Victrix and Wargames Atlantic.

The later Persians have more armoured troops with aspis shields (Cardakes) as well as a pair of Scythed Chariots (3D printed).

I then converted some Victrix armoured cavalry to make some Kinsman Cavalry with "armoured saddles" out of plasticard.

Now I just need to start on my Greeks…. what's that, Victrix have just released a NEW set of hoplites… but I already have the old ones…

Absolutely brilliant work! I have just recently started on some Victrix Persians and they are lovely to work with. Your display is very inspiring.

Thanks, they are certainly a good excuse to use lots of colour and variety.

Very nice indeed! Funnily enough I'm also doing some Persians, and I'm also going to base them up so they can work for both older and newer armies.

I blame that 'Alexander the Great' series on Netflix…

Lovely looking army.

Really beautiful work there. Evocative color palette that really looks appropriate for the army. I like the basing too, it's quality but doesn't draw the eye away from the figures. Very impressive stuff.

I have a later Persian army in 10mm that I really can't wait to paint (but I need to be patient because I have other projects to finish).
