I have it in my head to try a solo Boxer Rebellion campaign. My premise is fictional, but I'd like to try to make my campaign theatre as rooted in geographical fact as possible. My problem is finding a somewhat detailed map of the terrain along the Pei Ho river from Taku or Tientsin to near Peking. Anybody know of one in the public domain? Thanks, Bob |

I think there is a map in one of my books. I can't be sure if it has any detail. I'll have a look. |

Thanks, Jim, that's what I encountered with my books. |

In the old easy to research topics internet days, the Methodist were sending many missionaries to China during the Boxer era and including the Warlord years. They published several books on their efforts including maps. I found this very useful when I was doing my research on unit combat rules for the era. Another item to check is the Savage and Soldiers articles on the Boxers. Lynn loved the Boxer Rebellion and even wrote an Osprey on it. His magazine was the pinnacle for Colonial gaming. |

I recommend that you do a point to point movement system. Key river crossings, population centers will be the most common ones. Mountain passes and agricultural areas that are needed to be controlled. |

Coincidentally, TVAG has come across an editable (well, I made it so) copy of the Legations map drawn up by the chief of engineers under Gen. Adna Chaffee. It currently measures 72" wide and 68" deep, with full details as to the type of defenses (brick, earth, wire, etc) as well as the layout of the British, German, US, Russian, French Legations, and the Su Wang Fu. The Italian (outside the defense perimeter), Spanish, and Japanese within are not detailed. I am searching for any maps from those sources in the hope of adding them, but so far as any game based on the Siege, this map is pretty much the last word. There is still some colorizing required, and superior (read "legible") text to be replaced by appropriate fonts, and other details pending completion, but I hope to have it ready to go within a week or so. It will be offered as PDF and/or JPEG for reproduction in any smaller size as may be preferred, but the current size works very well with 15mm figures. Price has not been set, but will not be outrageous. Regarding other maps of Tientsin and the route between there and Peking, I have other period maps as well, though not always as well detailed. If anyone wants some of these, I can provide them for cheap to free by a PM or E-mail to TVAG@att.net. An entirely new range of 15mm Boxer Rebellion figures is being completed for production soon to follow up with these maps, so please keep an eye open for more news here. TVAG |

I have a twelve-part campaign report on my blog about a wonderful semi-coop campaign for the Boxer Rebellion. The map I used is fictional and was drawn by Mal Wright. Drop by and have a look. Click on the Boxer Rebellion label to see all 22 Boxer Rebellion posts. link Eric |

Thanks very much, everyone! I did find something I think I can use at the Library of Congress. It's in French, but it should work! link Patrick, that map of the legations sounds awesome! My plan is to avoid them, though…the work needed to make the models….I have too much on my plate already! I got a copy of Worthington "Keep Up the Fire" game and thinking I'll try to integrate it into my miniatures campaign, thinking the legations portion would serve as a timepiece. link Disaster, I did spot that image…it is an inspiration, eh? Eric, very familiar with your blog and will revisit soon! |

That Legations map is coming along nicely, but I do have two other contemporary maps of the approach routes to Peking, if you want them. I will be offering a complete set of maps which may serve as the basis for a full Boxer Rebellion campaign soon. If interested, PM me or write me, as above. And that Bird's Eye View is an outstanding reference work, though I have a better copy I'm going to add to that map set. Cheers! TVAG |
