Back in the late 1980s one of the wargame magazines had a set of Russo-Japanese War rules that involved cards for the terrain that you turned over as you moved. I think it was a solo games the Japanese attacked a Russian trench. Miniatures Wargames I think was the magazine although I also used to subscribe to Wargames Illustrated back then. Anyone remember these? Have a copy? Know which issue and is it still available? Thanks |

The books by Michael Sayce are pretty good scenario and background books. I was making modifications to Bloody Big Battles for use by Pendraken 10mm range. Need to get back to it as this war could have changed WWI had the western advisors been listened to. I couldn't find any period specific rules that gave me the right feel for the period that I was looking for. BBB came the closest but still beyond the scope of the rules so I set out to adapt. The BBB mechanics are easily adapted for my needs. The period is worthy of a serious study and be more than just the "Game of the Week" approach. |

Yes, I remember those rules. It was a solo set where you played the Japanese attackers. I think either Miniature Wargames, Wargames Illustrated or Practical Wargamer. |

We have played several games of Ikonki, which I got from The Wargames Vault. The rules need some fleshing out but it gave us the feel for the period as we envisioned it. Morale is very important as the Japanese are a grade above the Russians. They also get far more machineguns as is appropriate. The author is responsive as well. |

I've found that GDW's "Over the Top" rules work quite well. |

Great War Spearhead may work for you. |

21eReg: Yes, they have more but are under the control of the Division Commander. They are his assets. Similar command and control as in WWII US, the rifle platoons do not have crew served MGs unless ordered to from the Heavy weapons platoon in the company. |

For supporting data on the war, you should consider the battle on and unit data.looks like over a dozen titles in the guide. Nafziger Collection. |

I have two volumes from George on the subject. Good suggestion, Rudy, and often overlooked. |

FD, From Shako to Coal Scuttle are a good set of rules we have used for Russo-Japanese War games, can be used as written but are also a good sandbox which can be adapted as the user wishes. Cheers! |
