I'm happy to see some of the smaller ships being restored and on display.

The Gato-Class Submarine USS Cobia is on display at the maritime museum in Manitowoc, WI. I first toured it in the 1970s when the sub opened to visitors. During WWII the Manitowoc Ship Building Company built 14 of the 77 Gato-Class submarines and 14 of the 120 Balao-Class submarines. The museum is a great place to visit if you ever visit the Lake Michigan shoreline area between Milwaukee and Green Bay.

Next time you're in Muskogee, OK, be sure to tour the U.S.S. Batfish. It is well worth the stop.

Live near the Silversides. Every year at the missing man ceremony for lost submariners and subs, they start her engines up. Each lost boat has a flower dropped in the water and the coastguard lays a wreath. Very somber ceremony.
