The use of "wheeled" rather than "towed" does not suggest a high degree of familiarity with artillery practice and nomenclature on the part of the writer.

I believe he means self-propelled, wheeled.

I stand humbly corrected. I guess my frame of reference is sufficiently outdated that I would only have thought of the old South African G-5. Now it's a category instead of an oddity; huh.

Class of modern arty includes ammo type, carrier type and chassis type. So it can be confusing. A artillery type can be a howitzer mounted on a self propelled chassis with the chassis being tracked or wheeled.

At the risk of sounding like Grandpa Simpson as I tuck into my plate of crow, in my days as an artilleryman, "self-propelled" meant tracked, and the G-5 was a curious outlier. But I now realize it has been awhile since I was au courant with the latest in mobility types.

Yes, I have not heard the term "wheeled" for towed FA, AFAIK … Thanks for clarifying that Bill …

Regardless, many Light units, e.g. 82d, 101, etc. have towed FA as in most cases they can be brought in by Helicopters, either slung loaded or internally. But usually, the FA is slug under the chopper … So it can be more quickly put into action.

Of course, there are both tracked and wheeled SPFA. The USA's are mostly tracked, save for e.g. HIMARS.

Yes, really long list worldwide going back to WWII. Some of the other nation's "wheeled" SPFA, look huge. I have seen a number of them in the news, etc.
