Going off on a tangent (sorry), however, why did Austrian high command and royalty prefer green feathers on their headgear? Is it in place of the green sprigs traditionally affixed to the headgear of the rank and file? |

Not sure why feathers in the hat have been so popular with soldiers, but Austrians Generals (and I am not sure if this was by regulation or custom) wore green cockeral feathers in their hats – but it appears that the Austrian royalty's fondness for feathers may date back to the Spanish Hapsburgs, who in the 16th century started feathers on their somber black clothing, apparently some imported from their North American possessions – they kept it up; Franz Ferdinand had green feathers in his hat at Sarajevo in 1914 (would have been better for everyone if he had Kevlar in his jacket, but that's another story) link |
