hello
connoisseurs of the KK Army here?
what kind of uniform/unit is this mysterious "soldier in Bucarest" painted by Théodore Valério in 1854?
I suspect he is a Seressaner but not of the Grenz-Infanterie-Regiments, looks like rather the Militär-Grenz-Gendarmerie
I found a similar uniform with two men but with no boots nor plate in the colback, maybe because he is a NCO zugfürher (3 stars)
from I found in Bucarest there 2 brown-clothed border Grenz-Regiments (Croatian Grenz-Infanterie-Regiment Sluin/Szluiner n°4 and Slavonian-Syrmian Grenz-Infanterie-Regiment Peterwardeiner n°9) but the dress of their Seressaners is the usual traditional clothing and can't be mixed with the previous soldiers of the Gendarmerie :
Seressaner attached to the Croatian Grenz-Infanterie-Regiment Sluin/Szluiner n°4 by same artist
no idea if such Militär-Grenz-Gendarmerie was in Bucarest at that time, both Grenz-Infanterie-Regiments were sent with 2 Infantry Regiments, 2 artillery batteries, one pionnier company with 2 bridge crews and a field hospital…
after the Russian withdrawal the Roumanian principalties of Walachia and Moldavia under Ottoman rule were occupied by the Austrian Army between 1854 and 1857
