Working on the tabletop for the first day of Gettysburg, which includes the town. A question I've not yet found an answer to: Were any of the streets of the town paved with cobblestones or macadam gravel paving? Or were they all still dirt (mud)? |

Good question, during one of the times I visited I remembered reading or hearing that the town was renowned for their quality riding carriage industry. That doesn't point in one direction or the other regarding paved streets but I would image be if they were that a portion of the paved areas would have been retained. |

N. The streets were dirt. I have researched this quite a bit, but I cannot give you my sources. Outside of town, probably at or about the toll houses, the turnpikes were "paved." Tom |

If you can find a copy of "Gettysburg, A Journey in Time" by William A. Frassanito, purchase it. It is absolutely packed with period photos of the town of Gettysburg and the surrounding battlefield, along with comparative photos of what those locations look like today. It will answer any questions you have regarding terrain. Per the period photos, the roads were definitely dirt, and apparently quite dusty. |
