Very nice tutorial! I especially liked the technique of using orange dots to get a "glow" around the portholes.

Thanks!

Beautiful work!

Good work MiniDragon .

I initially thought your panels were painted with too much contrast, but after the wash and black lining , it all blends so well together.

I must finish scratchbuilding my fleet to try some (all) of your techniques. Do you think mixing the base colour with metallics might vary the surface sheen slightly ?

I think I'll try a propelling pencil or drawing pen for outlining the panels. I doubt my hands are as steady as yours.

Very nice work.

Tell me what tool you use to make the portholes/windows?

Tks

I used a #1 brush for the windows. That's a good size for me because I can get a nice, round, spot on there with just one quick touch. I find that if I use something smaller I have to poke a few times and my dot may look more like a blotch.

This was interting – Especially to see someone apart from me using a filler/primer for minis; I have access to the old Dulux 2D primer ( It's now Pittsburgh Glass or somebody ) and that works very well so long as you don't spray on too much and dry it thouroughly.

And some great new ideas too that I will be trying. Thanks for this teaching period! :)

What I hated about this article: Now all my spaceships need to be repainted.

What I loved about this article: The end results are awesome, and thanks to the article, I have the tools to do it. :-)

On Balance: This rocked. Thank you.

Would you recommend a black wash to get the lines? I can see myself slowly dying if I had to paint all those lines individually. Alternately, what about a brush pen?

Minidragon Fezian26 Mar 2008 5:28 p.m. PST

A wash would certainly help with getting some of the lines filled in for you. For the rest you are left with painitng or drawing them on with a pen – A Micron pen specifically – the 01 size (I think that's the smallest they do the tip is .25mm wide) is great for making thin lines on just about anything!
