writes:In preparation for the Legnica 15mm Fall In battle sponsored by Thistle and Rose, I decided to paint up this vignette figure from that line. I usually use a black primer technique, and to bring out the details on this figure, I did a light drybrushing with grey.
Since I decided to make these into military order knights, I went with all white for the coats and cape, then added some Oily Steel, leaving some black showing to add depth to the figure. I drybrushed the Oily Steel with silver to add a little depth.
Then, I added some browns and other colors to the dead Mongols. Notice the detail on the base of the figure.
A couple layers of brown on the coats, and a charcoal grey for the fur on the hats. Last, I did the flesh. I usually use two layers of flesh for 15mm, starting darker with Reaper Rosy Shadow and Rosy Highlights. Notice the terrific details on the base: a severed hand and a broken sword.
When finished with the colors, I washed the figure with Agrax Earthshade by GW. This is a very easy wash to use, and it gives great results.
I decided to mount these on a 40mm square base, and use a very simple basing technique I learned from Paul Potter… First, add a little Modge Podge, then dip in some flocking. Then a mix of black paint and acrylic floor polish to cover the flocking. I use an eye-dropper and let the liquid run to the right place, much easier than trying to use a brush.
After the black dries, you can drybrush it with a brown, and then add little patches of longer green grass to your liking. It is a simple technique, but very effective for 15mm.
This Thistle and Rose vignette is a great model, with the kind of detail you typically do not see in 15mm. Really looking forward to the re-release of this figure line.
