Hi Shawn,

Acrylic Gesso is an artists product that was developed as a coating for surfaces before painting. It is available in any art supply store and many hobby centers. Usually comes in Quart sized and larger containers. To use it just paint it on and then let it dry completely (usually 24 hours for me). It shrinks a bit as it dries so it does not obscure details.

I'll send you an email as well.

Best regards,
Dave

I was exchanging emails with Dave at DJD Miniatures the other day about an upcoming Workbench project, and he asked me, "Could you please let me know what happened with my last workbench article for the NKVD command?" I had to chuckle, because I couldn't believe he'd forgotten that we'd run that article a long, long time ago!

But then I couldn't find it on the website. I thought it must be some kind of glitch on the server... but no, the article wasn't there!

So... ahem... without further ado, here's the NKVD Command article that DJD Miniatures did for TMP quite a while ago - and Dave says their painting has improved a few notches since then, so look forward to their next Workbench article, coming soon (I promise!).

In talking with Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian, we agreed that as there were 2 sets of command, we would split them up - and paint one to represent border guards, and the other, standard NKVD. As the base colors were the same, we kept them together through the painting process.

First was some flashing and filing. Then the figures were washed in soap and water to remove any residue left from the mold.

Washed and ready to prime

They were nicely based on metal disks when they arrived (thanks, Bill!), so no work was needed to glue them onto holders for painting. So the next step was the primer coat.

Primer coat

I'm a big believer in black primer as the best way to keep those really deep shadows, so that is what we used here. I've never been entirely happy with spray primer, so we used a paint-on black primer that gives a smooth, even coat.

If you want to make a good paint-on black primer, just take a black acrylic (we use artist acrylics, but hobby or miniature acrylics are fine as well) and add about 10–15% by volume of white PVA glue, then mix and add water to thin as needed. Paint on a thin coat of this mixture as your primer, and keep any extra in a jar for your next batch of figures.
