I just found this very old article and thread. I enjoyed reading it immensely. Before Army Painter I too tried the mini wax stains and the floor polish and stain method. neither worked for me. One early system my locals came up with was the Tester's brush on gloss cote (X19) was the product number. they would then add a drop of gloss black or some other shading color. it worked reasonably well but the bottles always dried up to fast. I owned a shop then and gamers would by a dozen bottles at a time.

Other than my WWII troops I am a shiny toy soldier look guy so I usually use the Strong with a coat of (wait for it) gloss cote spray afterwards. I do use soft if the figure is heavily whit or lighter colors such as 7YW Austrians or French.

Anyway it is part of my painting ritual.

And then it's time to make a base (from 0.080" (2mm) plasticard) and assemble the chariot, horses and people, and then we begin to get an idea of what the finished model will be like.

Ready for basing

After Dipping comes basing. I do all my basing the same way, to create a unified look. First of all, I glue on a mixture of sand and fine grit in little patches.

Grit added

I paint the whole base with Vallejo Green Brown, and drybrush the grit with Bleached Bone.

After that, I glue on two layers of Woodland Scenics Green Blend turf (one layer seems rather thin and patchy), and add some Silflor 'tufts'. And Hey Presto - finished!

Close up

I hope this was informative. I don't mind whether you like the result or not, nor do I mind whether anyone else uses it. I do quite like it, and I've managed to paint more figures in less than a year than in the previous five put together. They look even better 'en masse' on the tabletop than they do individually.

I have a webpage with a blog, where I discuss my take on the hobby, and show off progress.
