I then painted a dark grey basecoat on most figures, although some I did with a dark brown. This was then highlighted with a lighter grey drybrush, a white drybrush or a white wetbrush, and then a lighter brown on the dark brown basecoat.
This led to a sense of uniformity, yet had some differences to keep the figures looking individual and interesting. I then painted the fleshy tones in what I call the Flames of War technique: painting so that some areas were left with black lines, to exaggerate facial features.
I then painted boots and webbing black, and did the metal and woodwork on the weapons. I then finished up on the furry hats, which were easily topped off with white drybrushing. A bit of touching up here and there, and in just short of three hours I had done them, spread out over a week.
I'm sure I haven't done these lovely figures the full justice they deserve. I'm also sure that my photography hasn't entirely done them justice either, but they were a joy to paint, and although initially I was looking more forward to painting the Italians, I actually enjoyed painting these more!!! I'm sure that if I've got any of the details wrong, then someone on here will enlighten me so I can improve my technique and knowledge.
