The miniature has been gloss varnished with Ronseal Ultra Tough Hardglaze, a polyurethane varnish. Once this dried, I used a Humbrol satin varnish over the metallic areas in an attempt to tone down the high gloss finish.

Here is the finished miniature - based, varnished, and ground cover added.
